By MARY DEPTUCK’ MONTREAL (CP) — Official re- ports and testimony claim she was brutally murdered along with’ her parents and four siblings sometime during the night of July 16, 1918, while in detention in Siberia. Grand Duchess Anastasia, young- est daughter of Czar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra Feodorvna. of Russia, is said to have escaped death in a:-volley of gunfire from her Red Army executioners by fainting, only to revive and be fatally stabbed by bayonets. But American author-actor'Peter Kurth is convinced that an 82-year-old woman living in Charlottesville; Va., who is notorious after 47 years of unsuccessful attempts and vicious court battles to prove her identity, is really Anastasia Nicolaievna. So do the dozens of witnesses that Kurth, 80, cites in his first book Ana- stasia: The Riddle of Anna Anderson, a biography which took more than 10 years to complete and which, for the first time since the beginning of her ordeal, provides exhaustive and con- vincing documentation supporting the claims of the alleged netvess, to the Romanov dynasty. The 450-page hardesves book, published three weeks ago in the United States, is scheduled to be re- leased in Canada this week. Author Peter Kurth says he can prove Anna Anderson Is Anastasia Is Anna Anderson 7 really Anastasia? Anderson-Manahan. REJECT APPEAL But by the time the latest. proof was provided in 1977, Germany's Supreme Court had turned down a. second appeal by her supporters, and Anastasia, who had only grudgingly consented to testify at the trials, no longer sustained any interest in the case. “I am ill of dirt," she said after being informed of the new evidence. “I am ill of constant, constant questions.” Anastasia's story, as related by Kurth, is a nightmare which begins with the family massacre, an event which in itself has never been sub- stantiated since no human remains _ were ever recovered. Anastasia at 82 is crippled with arthritis and still bears scars from what doctors have described as bay- onet and bullet wounds. She claims she ‘was secretly rescued by a Red Army guard, Alexander, Tschaikovsky, who her across the border to “There were times in the course of (writing the book) when I really thought I must be out of my, mind,” Kurth said in an interview while in Montreal to promote the book and meet with officials at the World-Film Festival to negotiate possible: film rights. “I know her story well enough to know no one had really gotten anything but grief (from Ce involvement with Anastasia). “But Somsthing kept me going.I think it was the certainty she had been misused.
