FRED MERRIMAN. We are now hearing much flack ‘about First Choice TV and are they loving all the free publicity. However, that point must be put aside for another day. The discussion about what is moral and what is not, though, does interest me. y I begin with the dictionary definition of morality? “The right ér! wrong of an action.” We read back to the word moral and see, ““Goog in’ character or conduct; viet 5 ing to civilized standards of ae wrong.” Gy Now where does that lea Fox, the official censor oF “thie good-intentioned people who are lobbying for tight control and other limits on the kind of material which will be available on pay-TV? I wouldn't take the job if you gave it to me. I am quite sure there are people who would be shocked and offended to see a chicken beheaded. It used to make me lose my'stomech when my Dad the with a world not leave weil’ enough alone? I" am not, and probably never will, be ina -position of moral: perfection which would-then qualify me to moralize on Tietheee I believe that given a choice of right and wrong — whether or-not standards to most ‘people (including “ehildren) will ‘choose that: shih: is good. Whave ‘met very ‘tow people in half-a-century who in my opinion would jualify'as model citizens in the moral sense. Those people who do qualify do not give me, the: impression that they bebe dirteigereny Spratt In fact most of the really moral people that I do know confine them- | selves to an attitude of acceptance. “They go quietly about their lives helping people to live moral lives by Without king th short handled axe. I personally think that it is immoral to kill a chicken, yet . the dictionary would seem to call it moral simply because it is. not wrong according to civilized standards of Fight and wrong. It's interesting to note that my feelings of immorality do not seem impinged as we feast on chicken at the eveningsmeal. At present we have a wide range of immoral possibilities on” the local television and even in the Holy Bible where we read of incest, mass murders and hanging — good and bad alike — on a cross. Is it not a possibility that the moralists should look at that great Book and reduce it to the Sermon on the Mount and perhaps the 28rd Psalm? Here at last is my point. Why can't d ey seem to say, “I am happy, healthy and at peace with myseif and others because I live this way and believe this way. I invite you to do likewise. “If you should choose differently, I will be said for you. I will not condemn or criticize or interfere. Perhaps in time you will see that morality is better than immorality whatever it may mean,” I feel for the people who are concerned about the material that may get into their living rooms television. It is my hope, nevertheless, that the freedom to choose shall be upheld. Those who are concerned for the sake of the immoral should change to another channel. We can always hope that, in due course, they aleo will discover for the and pseud f the h Ives what morality is all about. ‘West. « Castlegar News: y public has ‘been’ tombarded re. heir forteestoes irae tp ble callousness of the: federal gov < income. ion‘ vero ineome up to $1040. oe ‘ of. Thus $105,000 minus $35,000 equals $70,000. This $70,000 can be reduced by at least two retirements, thus 4/10 or 4 X $60,000 equals: $24,000. Total now is if cuts are made in the‘area of high cost as set out in the board “report © In conclusion, we feel that. natural attrition, unforseen conditions will leave the ‘ board in a surplus situation as it was at the end of 1962, Hopefully, : attrition will be the handmaiden of the ministry. and we appreciate . the~ board’s comment on attrition.
