VANCOUVER (CP) — News-
paper political’ columnists
should not be parrots per-
ched on cabinet ministers’
shoulders of jackals yapping
at their heels, says a Univ
ersity of British Columbia
political seientist,

Instead, Paul Tennant
said, political columnists
should be ravens, because
not only is it the “wisest of
the birds, it is also the best of
scavengers.”

Tennant was one of four
panelists at a public forum on
the role of columnists spon:
sored by the B.C. Press
Couneil.

Also on the panel were:
Gerald Haslam, newly app-
ointed publisher of Pacific
Press, Vancouver Sun's pro-
vineial columnist Vaughn Pal
mer and George Le Masurier,
editor and columnist of the
Comox District Free Press.

One thing they agreed on
was that columnists should
be anything but dull.

Haslam said there are less
columnists now who are
“personalities’’ and
said many in Canada now
suffer from “an attack of the
blands.”

“I detect, looking at news-
papers, that our columnists
have become more cautious,”
Haslam said

Palmer decried what he
said was the growing trend of
news reporters writing as if
they were columnists.

In response to a question,
Palmer said the role of the
political columnist in B.C. is
to explain issues and party

bitterly polarized as B.C.'s, it
is useful as often as possible
to simply try to explain
(issues and events),” he said.

Tennant said political col-
umnists have one of the
highest callings in journal-
ism. “They should handle

VICTORIA (CP) — Getting children to do their
homework doesn't have to be a battle, says learning skills
vedpert Shirley Henderson.

“The key to developing positive study habits in kids
is to set up a physical and emotional environment that is
conducive to study, said Henderson, who has taught a
learning skills course at the University of Victoria for six
years.

But that does not necessarily mean sending children
off to an isolated area.

“For some kids the best environment might be the
kitchen table where they can sit and share what they are
learning with their parents.

“Doing homework can be a lonely pursuit. shut
off in a room may not be right for your child. Besides, the
best way to learn is to tell someone about it. It helps
reinforce learning if a child can talk about what he is
doing while he is doing it.”

However, the study place should not have too many
distractions, she said.

children work out a suitable quiet time each day in which
homework is to be done. It may have to be split into two
or more periods to accommodate a favorite television
show.

helpful than one long one since the human brain can only
process a limited amount of information at one time, she

She contends the mate who

Generally, she said, careful
spenders “would also use
discretion not only in the
selection of their partners,
but in the level and quality of
their participation.”

would withhold (sex) ...even
if it might bring them .

Setting the right emotional environment is as
important as the right physical environment, Henderson
said.

Parents are often anxious about their children's
homework because they know its long-term effects. But
they also know this is something they can't do for the
child so they become frustrated and transmit. their
anxiety to the child.

Parents shouldn't hesitate to help a child with
homework, she said.

“You can't do the homework but you can be the one
to motivate and encourage.”

A good place to start is by questioning the child
about what he did in school that day. Too often parents
accept the answer “not much” and leave it at that.

STUDY RULE

Henderson's basic rule for studying is to understand
it, practice it and test yourself.

When a parent asks a child questions about his
schoolwork, the child gets an opportunity to do all three.

“It's usually better to add to a child's privileges
through some kind of reward system when they do their
homework rather than withdraw privileges for not doing
it.”

“Ifa kid has neglected his homework for years, don't
expect him to finish all the work neatly without whining,”
said Henderson.

Scientist does TV demos

TORONTO (CP) — Scientist David Jones well
remembers the day he asked thousands of British residents
to hold up pieces of toilet paper to the sky and then send
them to him. They did, too.

He also remembers the time he loaded his car with lime
jelly to prove a mountain can collapse under its own weight.
And the time he was instrumental in unearthing a scrap of
18th-century wallpaper that may have poisoned Napoleon —
though not fatally.

Jones, a self-labelled “science consultant for the media,”
does offbeat TV demonstrations in an attempt to pass on to
the scientifically ignorant a few basic principles. But his
experiences on two British and one West German television
show sometimes prove to be more slapstick than scientific.

“It’s a totally new field,” Jones explained in an
interview while in Toronto as a guest of the Ontario Science
Centre

The toner, jpaign was an experiment that best
demonstrates television's limited yet effective ability to
conduct legitimate scientific research, Jones said. He asked
people to hold a piece of toilet paper outside for a few
minutes to let it absorb any drops of rain.

GOT RESULTS

About 2,500 people sent him the results, which provided
an instantaneous rainfall map of Britain and the basis for a
university student's master of science thesis.

But science and television seldom mix that well since a
“TV demonstration, to grab watchers, has to do
something dramatic in six seconds.

“This leaves out about 90 per cent of science,” he says.

The less-than-successful jelly experiment was intended
to show how high a mountain can be before it collapses under
its own weight. Jones decided to use lime jelly as a rock
substitute and emptied every store in his home of
Newcastle-upon-Tyne of jelly powder. He set the jelly in his
bathtub, and then drove the mounds of moulds in his tiny car
to the studio.

By the time he arrived on the blistering hot day, much
of the jelly had melted and he only managed to prove that
“no matter how big a jelly you make, it sinks down to six
inches high.”

Take the case of Napoleon's wallpaper. On one of his
radio shows, Jones featured arsenical wallpaper — a paper
dyed green by copper arsenite that was popular in the late
18th century. If the wallpaper got wet, it released arsenical
fumes and people breathed them in.

Historians and scientists have estimated that hundreds
of luckless householders were poisoned — many of them
fatally — by their wallpaper, although precise figures aren't
available.

This reminded Jones of a claim by several historians
that Napoleon Bonaparte was secretly poisoned by arsenic
while in exile on St. Helena. As a throwaway line, Jones
asked anyone listening to the show if they knew the color of
Napoleon's wallpaper on his prison island.

“What followed was the most astonishing piece of
scientific good fortune of my life,” says Jones. A woman who
had a scrap of wallpaper from the room where Napoleon died
in 1821 contacted Jones, d scientific and historical
research a strong lihood that he was
although not fatally, by his wallpaper.

This would explain the arsenic traces found in
Napoleon's hair after his death — and also deals a blow to the
conspiracy theory.
