WorkPLACE Jewel of the North Reworked Red ready to ski into the 1990s Jonathan Green NEWS REPORTER Powder Magazine calls it the skiing secret of North America. But to B.C. skiers, there’s no se- cret about the majesty of Red Mountain. For almost 100 years, skiers have travelled far and wide to to taste the powder of the West Kootenays. The hill was host to the first Canadian Downhill Champi- onships in 1897, and was the site for the first chair-lift in Western Canada in 1947. In 1989, the city of Rossland sold the hill to Red Mountain Re- sort Inc., a group of six business- men led by President Skat Pe- tersen. From the date of purchase, the new owners committed them- selves to making changes, among them the remodelling of the base lodge, extensive rock removal and excavation, and the purchase of additional snowgrooming equip- ment. But the biggest change was the building of a day lodge higher up the mountain, designed by the B.C. architectural firm of High- land Planning and Design. The lodge offers 1,600 square feet inside the building, with an additional 1,400 square feet of deck space outside. With an em- phasis on light, it will also feature some 500 square feet of windows. Red Mountain’s Beth Thomson said the lodge’s opening was slated for mid-November, but delays pushed the opening back a few A With close to 30 marked runs and 50 kilometres of cross-country trails nearby, Red Mountain offers something to every skier. After almost a century of Rossland ownership, the ski hill has changed hands. The new owners are making some pleasant changes to skiing in the area.. weeks. “We're hoping that it will be ready for December 13th,” she said.“They’re just putting the fin- ishing touches on it.” Though the lodge’s opening is behind schedule, Thomson said that they are staying within the initial $200,000 budget. Something new being offered up the mountain will be para- asport Th -gliding with skis.” In addition to all the casual ski- ing, Red Mountain also offers a ski school under the direction of Louise LaFontaine, whose back- ground includes instruction at sev- eral ski areas in Quebec and Al- likens to rta. But what keeps skiers coming back is the snow, and the abun- dance of it, with average yearly snowfalls totalling 300 inches. This is the first complete ski season with the GST in place, which means that prices have in- creased. But Thomson says that Red Mountain’s rates are compet- itive. “Our prices have gone with the ski industry,” she said. And with the weak Canadian Th said Red Mountain has entered into a fraternity of sorts with other ski areas. “Our season passes are recipro- cal with about 20 other ski areas in B.C., Alberta and Washington,” she said.“Day passes are half- price.” The image of a skier is one of a young, blond, blue-eyed god or god- dess. Thomson says that’s a stereo- type, adding that one of the hill’s ski instructors is 82 year-old Gil Page. “We're getting more older skiers,” she said.“These people cut the first runs” Red Mountain has helped hone the skills of more members of Cana- da’s National Ski Team than any other area in the country, among them Castlegar’s Felix Belezyk. Rossland’s Jack Mitchell has just released a book on the area’s ski history titled “The Hills Around:75 Years On Skis In Rossland”. ‘ Proceeds from the book's sale will go the Rossland Historical Mu- seum Association.
