Mann, the well-known railway pro- moter and contractor, and member of the firm of Mackenzie & Mann, last week in January or the first week in February. Any lingering idea that the government had of an appeal to the country this winter has been entirely dispelled by the events of the past month. Mr. Tarte has developed into a veritable “old man of-the sea,” and until the the Miners Hall, The hospital fair, which “has _proven such a pleasant social suc- cess, willbe continued this evening in the Miners’ hall: A number of articles are still to be raffled and voted for. : Among the articles raffled were: Bird and Cage—Raffled by Mrs. Fitzpatrick; won by Mrs. Clara. - Tonkin. se Green and Pink Satin Ribbon whose contract with the D government for the construction of the Yukon railway will be well re- membered, has returned to Canada from his recent trip to China. He went out to the Celestial empire in search of a ‘‘concession” or two, and toa reporter last evening he declared that he had been success- ful in his designs. Speaking of Chinese railroads in general Mr. Mann said: “The Imperial Chinese railway, owning about 330 miles, one line being from Tien-Tsin to Pekin, 75 miles in length, comprises the whole system except a little road of 12 miles connecting the bar or port with Shanghai. The last road has a curious history. “Years ago, when it had been completed, the anti-railroad element gave a poor coolie $70 to allow himself to be run over by the hated foreign invention and killed, It should be said that he carried out his part of the strange contract to the fetter. The coolie gave most of the money to his family and with gov t can do hi to lessen the feeling existing in all parts of Canada against the minister. of public works there will be no ap- peal to the country. While the date of the meeting of the houses has not been definitely nor formally fixed, ministers have talked the matter over and have come to the conclusion that it shall not be later than Thursday, Jan- uary 2gth or February 1st. In reaching this decision they have been infil d by the repr tions of prominent supporters all over the country, who have become heartily tired of summer sessions. Several contracts have been awarded for supplying Canadian hay for the use of the troops in South Africa. G. W. McCullough of this city is one of the successful tenderers. The major contract, it appears, goes to W. C. Blooming- dale of Boston, who has the option of shipping from that port if he can-* not conclude his purchases before the close of navigation on the St. Lawrence. A Montreal dispatch says there is much objection in that a small balance proceeded to ‘paint the town red,’ and when this had been accomplished to his entire sat- isfaction he placed himself on the track and met death according to contract. This accident had the desired effect and the imperial au- thorities had the rails torn up and everything connected with the road in question was taken to the Island of Formoso and piled on the beach, where the debris remains to this Miners’ union, ever known in Ross- land. ——— Another Troopship.
