New Forest
And Range Acts
Proclaimed

Anew forest act and a new
range act have been proclaimed
by the ‘government and will
become effective Jan. 1, For-
ests Minister Tom Waterland
announced last week.

The new acts are the result
of about four years of careful
and detailed study of the pro-
vince's forest sector and replace
acts which originated in 1912
(forests) and 1919 (grazing),

It is expected the regula-
tions accompanying the new
acts will be in use before the
end of the year.

“The basic thrust," Water-
land said, “is to make good
management mandatory for all
Crown forest land.”

“In other words, the gov-
ernment will make timber
available for harvest only on
condition that the companies
manage it properly. If they
don't, they'll lose it.”

There are 179 sections to
the new forest act, Seven of
them, relating to assignments
of tenure and logging taxes,
were proclaimed and became
effective last July. Last week's
proclamation covers the re-
maining 172 sections. It also
covers: all 54 sections of the
province's new range act.

Waterland describes the
entire package as “the most
progressive forest and range
legislation anywhere in North
America.”
