Blindness won't prevent runner from competing VANCOUVER (CP) — Pat York will look like just another face in the crowd May 8 at the start of. the Vancouver International Marathon. York will be someone special, however, in his first marathon race over the gruelling distance of 25 miles and 385 yards. What will distinguish the 29-year-old runner from the rest of the expected 1,600 marathoners is the fact, that he is blind, and has been since the age‘ of 11. York has become one of the finest blind athletes in the world since he began running seriously five years ago. - He holds the world blind record for 400 metres, which he set last year at the Olym- piad for the Disabled, and also bas a share of the world Bitrid-r =7:York said recent “wants to change from “ahait © sprints to long distances be- cause of the challenge and “the fact I think I can do it.” IKED HIS FRIEND He. decided to enter the 1981 marathon last August with Bob They built their'stamina up tosix miles a day before York suffered an injury” before Christmas. “I got a stress fracture in my left leg,” he said. “That was in December and I had to stop training for six week.” York and McKay have been training six days a week for three months and now have reached up to 20 miles in some of their sessions. TRAINED TO STOP The blind runner also is having problems with his dog Ralston, trained to protect York when his special collar is attached. That means stopping at all corners, stop signs and so on. “We took off the collar and attached a long leash,” York said, “but. still, bis animal instincts are such that he keeps stopping from time to ie, “He's gone as far as 16° miles with us, but we'll make a decision on whether he'll run race day, ong or: two hours before.” York is aiming fora time of about three hours and 80 minutes in the marathon, al- though his main target is “to finish the race.” This year's Vancouver Marathon has been desig- nated as the official Canadian Masters Marathon.
