Theatre Energy has taken the liberty of slightly updating this’ comic operatic melodrama and proven . successful, : Still set in post-war London, some lines have nonetheless been regionalized for effect — though one doubts whether the original work actually contained lyrical references to Kelowna wine and Winlaw, B.C. ‘Threepenny Opera is the story of Mac the Knife as he * meets his demise through backfiring escapades of amour and teetering loyalties. : To complicate further his life of crime and getaway, Mac finds himself married to the daughter of the King of Beggars, in love with the daughter of the chief superintendent of Scotland Yard, and hopelessly attached j to Ginny Jenny and her prostitutes. a Now, underline this with Brecht's acerbic satire of | gociety’s treatment of the poor and crippled — douse it . with hilarious lyries backed by the everpresent melo- _- drama piano, set it against a backdrop map of London add purposefully scruffy and rufian costumes and props — and you have Theatre Energy's The Threepenny Opera.
