They are also as transient as the phoenix, a mythical bird which would at regular periods in its existence burst’ into flame and then arise anew out of its own ashes. At this time both the island and Alexander Feodorovitch are rising out of their ashes once again after years ‘of neglect and “non-existence.” Their stories might be written as follows: Once there was an island located atthe confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers. In fact it is still at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia and is known locally as “Zuckerberg Island” after its former owner, who is, in a sort of left-handed way, also its creator and guardian spirit. Doubtless, the local Interior Salish Indian people + who for hundreds of years had called it:“home,” and built their fishing sites and winter pithouses there, had a much more romantic name for it — “Daughter of Two Rivers” perhaps; doubtless, Alexander Zuckerberg who came. here in the early 1980s and was also a romantic, had he / ALEXANDER ZUCKERBERG < ++. Unfortumately, all the Indians were long gone and only the numerous crater-like pits bore mute evidence of their long residence. At the time of his arrival only one pit house still boasted its lodge-pole roof to give evidence of how the houses were built; and even it was rotten, to indicate the many years which had passed since it had been used for the island had been there for a long time. Then CPR surveyors divided ail the land along the railway right-of-way into neatly numbered parcels in order to offer them for sale at what are now ridiculously low prices, but naturally the Indians were not consulted. Alexander Feodorovitch had come to Castlegar about 1930 at the invitation of Peter “The Purger”. Verigin. Ethnically a German-Estonian, he had been raised in Russia and in most ways was more Russian than the Russians, and loved the land with an almost mystical love. He had trained as a civil engineer, but had spent all of his time up to the revolution teaching mathematics in am Imperial Russian high school ("gymnasium"), for teaching was his other love. Following the revolution he brought his family (Gil, his son by his seer a Asta, his . ter and Aliea, his dd after land on which to settle and'to teach the Doukhobor children. Once here, he proceeded to buy lots 71 andi72 (the Colville’s Biggest Event- 15th Annual moderator ee visits The Right Rev. Moreover, he quickly noted that the surveyors had completely over- looked the island so that it did not appear on the then survey maps. This was the island’s first disappearance! He wrote, therefore, to the Land Registry Office to notify them of the omission and was informed in true bureaucratic fashion that it didn't exist! The island called “Zuckerberg” had begun its long saga as a phoenix. Further correspondence and an offer to buy the Registry ‘island followed, after which time the Land Office finally conceded that there just might be an island but if it did exist it was Crown land and not for sale. They said most generously, however, that if Alexander Feodorovitch would agree to survey the alleged island at his own expense he might lease it for 99 years at a very nominal fee. He did have the land surveyed at his own expense but declined to rent and engaged in further negotiations. Finally, he obtained full title to the island, called it “Emerald Island” and noted with satisfaction that it appeared on the newest maps of the area. The island had now become a legal reality. The' proud new owner then built the-little oneinan log house at the north end of the island (it is still there) and a row-boat in which he crossed the river to teach the Doukhobor children at Brilliant and Ootischenia. He also cleared the land for an orchard and vegetable garden, installed. river water pump and irrigation system, built a barn on the west slope and the unique Russian “chapel-house,” made of dressed logs and a shake roof, in the island's centre. In these early years, perhaps tiring of the business of building, he gave expression to his artistic bent by sculpting the “stump woman” with the same axe that he was using to build his log chapel house. She still sits silent and enigmatic after almost 60 years, in front of the house. The house itself never was really finished, for he kept making minor changes on it almost until the time of e, Castlegar became a village, then a town with a new water system. The old man traded a lane right-of-way for a hook-up to the town water system and so had an uninterrupted supply of water (for a while). Since he was having increasing difficulty with his heart and the effects of an earlier osteomyolytis (a bone disease) which seriously curtailed his travel on his ofd black bicycle, and since he broke the already damaged leg with a motorized bike, he (with my help) built the present concrete road to the island.
