Hours—There Were Fifty Plates. . The grand banqnet tendered by the local lodge of the Knights of Pythia Saturday evening, at the Clare dor cafe, to James Haddow, grand chance: lor for British Columbia, was a most pleasant affair. Fifty members and in- vited guests eat down toas fine a spread as one would wish to see to in any country. There were ten courses, of the best money could buy. The table, whick was beautifully dec- orated reached from one end of the spa- cious banquet hall to the other. At the head saf Dan Thoimas, the mas- ter of ceremonies, with the grand chan- cellor to the right ‘and the mayor of th: city to the left. At the foot of the tabl- was W. R. Beatty, C. G., with .a repre sentative of the Rzecoxp to the right an: J. W. Nelson to the left.. At 11 o'clock the toastmaster propose: “The Queen,” which was drank heart: ly and followed by the national anthem. The chairman also proposed the toast, “The President of the United,” whicl. wasfeelingly, ably and eloquently re- sponded to by Mr.{J. W. Nelson. J. B Combes was also called upon and spoke briefly. “Our Guest”? was proposed by James. Wilks, and responded to by th: grand chancellor befittingly. He wa: deeply impressed with the bonor that was being shown him. W.F. McNeill proposed the toast “The Mayor and Gity Council,” and named Mayor Goodeve and Alderman Lalonde as respondents. Mr. Wilkinson brought the house down bya recitation of ‘*Fuzzy- ‘Wuzzy,” written by Kipling. . Messre. Moffitt and Smith spoke briefly. and, of course, eloquently. W.J. Wilson rendered James Whit- combe Riley’s ‘The Old Man and Jim,” to the delight of all. “The Commercial. and Mining Indus- try,” was responded to by William Harp, Mr. Weeke and Eber C. Smith. Then came a song by the grand chan- cellor which was duly appreciated. “The Ladiee,” was the last toast, and as usual afforded much amusement.
