PLUNGES AFTER FINE Younger man, safer bet KELOWNA (CP) — If men stopped marrying ‘younger women there would be fewer widows left to endure years of poverty, a former United Church minister said here Tuesday. Harry Mullens, now execu- tive director of the Sas- katchewan senior citizens’ provincial council, told del- egates to a Canadian Pension Conference western regional meeting here that the trend for women to live longer than men is still increasing. He said in the last two decades, life expectancy for women aged 65 has increased by three years to 84 or 85, while the life expectancy for men of that age has gone up by only eight months to 80. “So the chances are the male will die befqre the fe- male,” Mullens said. “We may have to change our social custom of men marrying younger women; women marrying an older man.” . He said if it. becomes cus- tomary for women to marry men younger than them- selves, “chances are they would both end up about the. same time rather than the women having this long widowhood, which for many means poverty.” Mullens, 60, said: “I have told my wife that when I kick the bucket, do your grieving. Then go back to life, which may include a -husband or lover.” The financial problems of elderly women living on in- adequate incomes, either be- cause they are widows or be- cause they have held mainly lower-| “paying jobs, is one of the major concerns in the pension field. Federal Health Minister Monique Begin said solutions’ to other general pension . problems such as greater ac- cess to private plans, porta- bility and protection against inflation, will not resolve the particular problems of wom- en. Admitting that nothing “of a very high profile” has hap- pened since a national pen- sion conference six months ago at which she and Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Tru- deau said it was time for ac- tion, the minister's speech said there has been sub- stantial activity behind the scenes. This has included meetings between federal and pro- vincial officials, a telephone poll, of 1,000 people, and planning with women's groups for regional seminars on pension issues of major concern to women. Beaver needed help to LINCOLN, NEB. (AP) — “B.V. the beaver needed hu- man help to overcome a fear of water. When he was brought to the rural Walton home of Carol Odell last June after .being found by a family the previous month, he was a seven-week-old wreck. B.V. weighed less than a kilogram and had pneumonia and fur that wouldn't repel water. In fact, he couldn't stand water. “He was an absolute mess,” said Odell, president of a group called the Wildlife’ Rescue. “I don't know whal happened to make him hate water.” Beavers normally’ spend much of their lives in water. Odell introduced B.V. to water by carefully placing adapt the animal in her bathtub. She said B.V was terrified at first, but slowly became used to it and then started to enjoy it: B.V. graduated to a plastic swimming pool and then to a local stream. The animal is now ready to be returned to the wild and was flown to Texas on Tuesday. “The reason he's going to ‘Texas is the mild winters and because I don't want a beaver in my bathtub all winter. And the odor is amazing,” she said of the musky oil the animals secrete to keep from being soaked. The transfer was accom- plished with the help of Deb- bie Marcum with a Wildlife Rescue chapter in Austin, Texas, who will care for the beaver.
