“ v2_Cast@Qar News sow 12.100 SPORTS mast GUY GREAVETTE INDIANAPOLIS (CP) — In 1963, Canadian weightlifter Guy Greavette won two golds and a silver medal at the Pan-American Games. A few days later, officials stripped him of the medals after tests indicated he had been using steroids. He was also suspended for two years by the With the suspen- sion went Greavette’s dream of lifting in the Olympics. The dream is alive again for the blond, soft-spoken lifter from Burnaby. He returned to the Pan-Am Games and picked up two bronze medals Tuesday night in the 82.5-kilogram cate; gory. “I never thought about '83 at all,” Greavette, 27, said after his performance. “But I did think about coming here and winning at least some medals to show I was still around.” Cuban Pedro Rodriguez took.all three golds Tuesday by sweeping the snatch, clean and jerk and the overall title with a total of 330 kilograms — short of the'mark of 340 kilograms lifted by Greavette in 1983 in Caracas. 16 DISQUALIFIED He wasn't the only athlete pinched in Caracas. Sixteen were disqualified — a scandal that rocked those Games. The consequences are evident in Indianapolis, where officials are doing the most extensive testing in the history of a multi-sport event. Greavette is four years older now, and a lot wiser. He was ready to quit the sport after the suspension. But .“it was too easy to quit. It’s better to keep with it.” If Greavette has any regrets about the last Pan-Ams, _ Picks up two bronze ¥ He bought steroids from a member of the Romanian lifting team. With the steroids came advice about when to stop taking the drugs so he could avoid detection. Greavette said in an interview that when he arrived in Caracas, he knew the testing procedures were sophisticated and he'd likely test positive. But the rules at that time said only winners in the overall category would automatically be tested. “I could have taken my gold medal in the snatch and kept my Pan-Am record and gone home. I would have just forfeited the clean and jerk. Nobody would have said anything. I could have gone out there and dropped the barbell three times. I don't know why I didn't.” Four years later, Greavette didn't sound repentant — just sorry he'd been caught. Canadian lifters face tough internal testing — as often as once a month and a possible lifetime ban if they are caught — while the Eastern European lifting countries are suspected of allowing their athletes to use steroids during training. “Canada’s the strictest in the world,” said Greavette. “There are a few countries (as strict), but they're like us — they don’t make a big impact on the sport.” That will never change, members of the Canadian team say, until the international federation gets tough on all countries. Greavette said he lifted lower weights Tuesday than he did four years ago because of a sore back — not because of the steroids he was using in 1983. Ironically, under the Pan-Ams’ new random testing procedures, Greavette wasn't asked to produce a urine Satellite dishes @° Bombers sore point By JIM MORRIS WINNIPEG (CP) — The Winnipeg Blue Bémbers’ attendance is up an average 660 fans after four games this year, but general manager Cal Murphy says even more people would pay to see the team at the stadium if they couldn't view home: games free in local bars. Bars using satellite dishes to pirate television signals have long been a sore point with Murphy. “There's no question it’s a problem,” he said Tuesday. “Studies we've done show a 65-per-cent (attendance) increase in 40 bars for our home games.” The issue of scrambling television signals was raised during a recent CFL board of governors meeting. Commissioner Doug Mitchell said scrambling could begin toward the end of the season. Only games shown on the Canadian Football Network, a collection of indpendent television stations with a contract to show some CFL games, would be scrambled. The Bombers drew 104,480 fans in four regular season games this year for an average attendance of 26,120. This compared to 101,843 fans for an average attendance of 25,460 after. four games last year. Murphy said the team needs 28,000 fans a game to break evén, “We have a chance to improve,” he said. “You always like to do better but we're not crying in the blue.” DEFEATS LIONS The largest crowd this season at the 32,946-seat Winnipeg Stadium was 29,296 Saturday during a victory over the B.C. Lions. helped attendance. The Bombers have also played the Ottawa Rough Riders and Calgary Stampeders at_home, Last year the Bombers played the Saskatchewan . Calgary, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Ottawa in their first four games. The best draw was 25,982 against the Tiger-Cats. The only sellout last year came in the second-last regular season game against Edmonton. ‘The Bombers are using several promotions to attract new fans. Jan and Dean, a 1960s rock and roll group, staged aconcert before Winnipeg's pre-season game against B.C. A crowd of 19,780 attended, compared with 21,526 for last year's exhibition against Edmonton. SINGERS PERFORM. Fomer Guess Who members Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman will perform a concert before Winnipeg's Aug. 22 game against Saskatchewan. Murphy admitted visions of a Bomber blowout over the struggling Riders was one reason for the concert ploy. “We looked at what we projected as a draw and we felt we could boost it a little bit,” he said. A family-directed promotion where a local food store buys game tickets, then sells them at a reduced price has also been successful. The end zone seats have been sold out for all four games. The Bombers’ shift to the Eastern Conference after the demise of the Montreal Alouettes might also help attendance later in the year. Winnipeg leads the East with 10 points, one better than the Toronto Argonauts and four ahead of Hamilton. 7 INSURANCE AND UCENSES. | 1127 - ath Street. Larry's value to the team is inestimable.” Robinson, 36, fractured the tibia bone in his right leg ‘Sunday when the leg was caught between his horse and another as he prepared to take a shot in a polo tour. nament in nearby Hudson. Robinson is expected to be off skates for up to three months but the 15-year vet- eran is convinced he will be a member of the 1987-88 Cana- diens. “Tm not beaten, far from VANCOUVER (CP) — John Henry White hoists it,” Robinson told Le Journal from the Montreal General Hospital. : “In three weeks, I'll begi exercises and therapy to strengthen the leg.” But Dr. ERic Leczner, the Canadiens’ orthopedic sur- geon, said Robinson will remain in hospital for one week and it will be three months before he can skate. Robinson has never suf- fered a serious hockey injury. Had Robinson accepted an informal invitation to attend the Team Canada training camp for this fall's Canada Cup, the two-time winner of the James Norris trophy as the league's best defenceman wouldn't have been in Hud- son for the polo tournament. Perron says Robinson's absence will hurt the Cana diens. “It’s not just on the ice that Larry is important . . . He's still as enthusiastic and he knows how to set the right atmosphere in practice. When the players are feeling down, he knows how to pick them up.” himself to a sitting position in his hospital bed as he talks about how his professional football career came to an abrupt end. White, a 10-year veteran with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League, had planned to retire at the end of this season. Instead, a serious injury to his left knee in a game Saturday against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, advanced those plans. “My career ended a few months early,” said the 81-year-old fullback. “I cameback for this final season because the Grey Cup is going to be played here in Vancouver and I thought I could be part of it.” His hospital stay will be indefinite and, for the time being, he must manoeuvre himself on his hospital bed with the help of an overhead suspension bar. “I remember my first game in the league,” the Louisiana-born White said in an interview Tuesday. “It was snowing in Calgary and I had just left 93-degree heat (back home). I looked up at the snowflakes and wondered what I ws getting into.” White was injured late in the fourth quarter of Saturday's loss to the Bombers in Winnipeg. He cleats locked into the turf as he tried to block for quarterback Greg Vavra and he tore some ligaments in the knee. But the durable five-foot-nine, 190-pounder missed only five of 143 games. “John Henry is the consummate team player,” said head coach Don Matthews of a man he has often described as the best blocking back in the CFL. “He spent a career trying to make other players look good.” White joined the Lions as a free-agent in mid-season 1978 after a four-year stay at Louisiana Tech and a tryout with the Kansas cia Chiefs in the NFL. inancing 3.9% F Car Lines 365-2155 Collect Contuy 2] BUICK GMC LTD.
