Labor unions, on the other hand, see these bills as a sinister threat to the laboring class that will eventually lead laborers back into virtual slavery: T have no intention of using this column to favor one side or the other. My first plea would be for both sides to pursue “justice.” But human nature being what it is, there is always the danger of both sides looking at an issue from a selfish point of view. There is danger of the government riding rough- shod over the rights of the working class in order to ac- complish what seems to them 40 - 6th Ave Castlegar 365-2175 For Your Convenience We're OPEN MONDAY WIN TICKETS Two subscribers names ore listed below. Because there are those on both sides who strive for selfish advantage . . justice is almost impossible to obtain. Nothing short of a real “change of heart” can bring about the harmony and equity we say we are seek- ing. God is not fooled, no mat- ter how pious our prayers, if we are not willing to treat our fellowmen honorably (See Isaiah 58:1-11). here, the prophet Isaiah describes the religious people as being dis- appointed because God did not answer their prayers or pay attention to their fasting. “You seem eager to ap- proach God, you ask for jus- tice... you fast and pray . . but you go out the same day and exploit your workers” (V:2-8). Rather, God says through his prophet: “You should loose the chains of in- justice and set the oppressed free!” The other side of the coin is that governments should re- ceive the leyal and whole- hearted support of those they govern. What we need, both in government and in the labor movement, are persons of true Christian character who are unselfish enough and noble enough to hear each other out, and come up with fair and equitable laws. We need leaders who will give moral and spiritual dire- ction to the people for whom they are responsible. True zeal for God will result in true zeal for justice. Auxiliary holds dinner The Castlegar and District Hospital Auxiliary held an end of the season annual pot luck dinner June 13 at the home of Auxiliary President Muriel Wilson. Reports were heard from all committees. A warm wel come was extended to special guests, among them: Denise Reed, director of nursing; Cindy Talarico, public health nurse; Mrs. Kulchyski of Castlegar; Evelyn Izatt of Delta. Lorreta Kazakoff, a new member, was introduced and warmly welcomed. The hos pital gift shop will be closed during renovations. The Auxiliary is losing a member, Ester Smithers, who will be moving to White Rock. Look for our special 30th anniversary event this fall, as well as the Auxiliary’s annual fall rummage sale in October. The next Auxiliary meet- ing will be in September. Tree TT John mens Ae ‘ , Reflections & recollections NEW DORM . . Westminster Abbey dormitory under construction in the Fraser Valley. CHARTERS LOOKS AT ABBEY All morning and for several previous nights I had been working on the preparation of term tests for the boys’ June exams, an eight-page discussion paper on heritage policy for Minister of Tourism’s Project Pride for mid-June and sundry other time consuming activities. All morning in the warm May sunshine there had been much coming and going of people and vehicles — trucks to skateboards, toddlers to grey beards. Outside my apartment window weekends can be busy and the mnastery is not always quiet though there are many quiet places. I got up and went to one of them — the new library with its magnificent view of the Fraser Valley. It was then that the visiting English bell ringers started ringing a “change” in the Pfitzer Memorial belltower. “Bong, bong, bong” they went down the scale — bright crisp but with such power that the sound had a physical dimension about it. “Father Bede will enjoy this,” I thought. Father Bede Reynolds is the onetime millionaire petrochemical engineer, author and world traveller who three months after his beloved wife, Patri died of cancer ' in 1945, decided to become a Benedictine monk. Part of the $2 million he gave away was used to build the now-famous belltower and Patricia is buried in a crypt at its base. Today, Father Bede in the twilight of his 95 years spends most of his time in his room, quietly cheerfully and confidently preparing for his own last journey, while the members of his monastic family lovingly care for all his needs according to tradition. The bells continue their merry dim so on the basis of “if you can’t beat ‘em, just beat it,’' I decided to take a sunshine walk about the Abbey grounds. The meadows below my window and beyond the blacktop road way flow past the shrubbery — edged ry to de Mary Lake dimpling in the sun, while two swim suited seminarians lie languidly sunbathing in a pair of rubber boats. Behind them, the meadows littered with white Charlois cattle — also taking their ease — rises to the orchards behind and the tree-coverd knob of “Mount Mary Ann” beyond. On the left is the shaded and fern-filled monastery wood, a favorite walking place. On the right is the copse with the Italian marble state of the virgin — another oasis of peace. A gust of wind whispers past and a sea wave rolls through the tall grasses toward the soccer field, the hedge rows and the fields and barns beyond in the valley. Yesterday, I had been taking pictures of the new residences, the church and the masses of flowering shrubs and ornamental trees along the road. I had just taken the last exposure on the roll when Father Placidus hurried up and pointed urgently in the direction of the meadows. There, in perfect light, and framed against the —CosNews Photo by Jock Cherter FATHER BEDE REYNOLDS . Benedictine monk lake were two deer grazing unconcernedly on the grass It happens every time. Right now there are a number of cars in the parking lot, but only a handful of people — probably at a meeting in the conference room — it is rarely empty, and, therefore almost no monks in sight; only Father Boniface, the librarian and he is hurrying to take a group of Portland guests to see the new Mission Heritage Centre which opened officially today. Very impressive. Father Mack Dumont (grandson of the Mark of Dumont Crescent) and fountain of historia] information took me to see it last week. The centre’s main building is beautifully made of large cedar logs and was until recently the Indian mission school of St. Mary's. Built about 1860 by the Oblate Father, it has a fine vista of the Fraser River below. It was one of the earliest settled sites in B.C. All that remains now are stone foundations of several building and the old andalmost full cemetery (mostly priests and brothers). However, its story is preserved in the book,Cross in the Wilderness by Kay Cronin, a local CBC journalist and author. Since there are no monks in the immediate vicinity, I reason, they may be in the residence, working. Last year at this time they were still raising the money to get the building started. By November the carpenters were putting on the three storey building's tile roof. Early in the new year the tradesmen had left and the monks had taken over the work of completion. It has 39 bedroom-studies, each complete with bathrooms and clothes closets. There is also an office, chapel, parlour and recreation room, several large utility and storage rooms, and since it was designed by the same architect, it melds with the rest of the complex of attractive buildings.
