Airlines angry over tax Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER ~ High taxes on airline tickets may force some airlines to reduce services to Castlegar, said the Chairman of the Castlegar Airport Advisory Committee. Dr. John Hall told City Council Mon- day that Air B.C. and Time Air have made it known that they may cutback services because high taxes are forcing consumers to seek.cheaper methods of transportation. Hall said tax accounts for $35.18 of every $100 airline ticket sold locally. He said mid-range airports such as those found in Castlegar and Lethbridge are hit harder than bigger airports. “Because the Air Transport Tax adds $10 to every $100 ticket up to $400, we pay a higher percent of taxes than long haul carriers,” Hall said. Hall recommended that council write to Transport Canada complaining of un- fair taxes, and co-ordinate their actions with the city of Lethbridge. Council unanimously accepted Hall’s proposals. Minister pleads poor on bridge Jonathan Green NEWS REPORTER Some 300 people crammed into Rob- son Hall Monday to listen to Art Char- bonneau, but he didn’t tell them what they wanted to hear. The Transportation and Highways Minister was in town to explain NDP’s position on the fates of both the Robson Ferry and proposed Robson Bridge. With the provincial deficit in excess of $2 billion, Charbonneau told the crowd the money for the bridge just isn’t in the budget. “Mr. Harcourt has made it clear we have to get the deficit under control,” he said. “I have to draw the line some- where, and I’ve chosen to draw it here.” He said the bridge would be built, it - was just a matter of finding the money. “If we can get into an economic up- turn, the possibility of starting the bridge next year is that much more pos- sible,” he said. In a question and answer session, Derek Todd of the Robson-Raspberry Ferry Users ad hoc Committée ques- tioned the minister’s financial opti- mism, saying it sounded familiar. “I wonder if you realize how much you sound like your predecessors, Mr. Charbonneau,” he said. “I feel _very much like I’ve been in this movie be- fore.” But Charbonneau countered, saying the Robson people will get their bridge. “When the promise of a bridge was made, there wasn't a $2.3 billion deficit hanging over our heads,” he said. “The bridge will be built. It’s just a question of when we can afford it.” When questioned about the return of the ferry, Charbonneau said it won’t happen because the bridge is on line. Though the crowd left waiting for a bridge and no ferry, Rossland-Trail MLA Ed Conroy said he’s just begun. “Tmt not about to quit,” he said. “We've been an NDP constituency for over 20 years, and we’ve been on the outside. Quite frankly, it’s our turn.” di Sadeee eee eTey tans
