Page B6 The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, September 13, 1995 t started with a dream. A | Ee to have esidential homes that overlook the city and the valley. A dream to have a subdivision with all the amenities of the city in a rural setting. A place in the heart of town with its own heart in the country. Woodland Drive Estates is such a place. This 32. lot controlled development is now complete. All servicing is underground, no overhead lines take away from the spectacular view. “Each lot is different and unique,” said Richard A&kew, one of the two developers “We have #ome lots with spring-fed creeks running through them and. the views! Woodland Drive Estates Grand Opening You just have to see it to believe it.” This development was certainly one of the more technically demanding projects fori Askew and co- developer Alex Cheveldave. “We had three engineers on this job. We had to cross under the railway tracks with underground sewer and storm sewer at two differént locations: We: blasted 4,000 cubic metres of rock which we then used to build four rock walls. “Even with all this we still came in on-time,” Askew commented. T.R.S Construction (Interior) Ltd. was the contractor on the job and their superintendent Willie Duval and foreman Darren Chard have been on site problem solving, interpreting and helping out. According to Askew, T.R.S. hired 20 local tradesmen and labourers. “All the contractors and subcontractors have worked very hard to make this project happen and we're extremely pleased with high quality of workmanship that is evident around us”, Askew said. The blasting and hauling of rock, laying. of underground storm and sanitary sewers as well as telephone, cable and power, digging of rock pits for drainage of the streams, and staking of lots was just the beginning. Once that was done, the road, cul de sac and lane were built, the sidewalks and curbing were poured and the street lights were installed Given the demanding technical aspects of this development, it seems amazing that it was just 83 short days after the official sod turning ceremony on June 9, that Selkirk Paving finished up the final touches on the road. “The City of Castlegar was very cooperative throughout the planning and construction phases of the subdivision. Railway ties were removed from the CPR line in order for the excavator to dig the trenches for the water and sewer lines to be extended up 15th Ave. into Woodland Drive Estates. More about the unforgettable Bill “Bill wasn't a flashy colourful character, a neon sign board. He was more of a summer rainbow, a broad spectrum of compassion and concern which spanned the horizons of family and friends.” Anon. Writing a biography of the late William Frederick (Bill) Shk- warok is like starting to pan a hidden gold stream showing only traces of colour On its surface gravels, but which after a little work with shovel and pan, reveals a surprising treasure of hidden nuggets In an August column I turned up some of Bill's less know asso- ciations with the history of the community which he loved so deeply. This time, taking a broad- er and deeper sweep of family and friends, I came closer to the essential man. Thus, in the eulogy given by Bill Junior at the funeral service in West Vancouver last month, Bill said: Dad was born in Nelson on October 6, 1919 to William and Next year he joined the three- man staff of the Castlegar High School, (a return to his roots) Later became assistant principal at Stanley Humphries Secondary School, and still later got a mas- ter’s degree from Gonzaga Uni- versity in Spokane. He taught at Notre Dame University in Nelson from 1964 to 1969, and finally went to work for the West Vancouver School Board as coordinator of testing and learning assessment, finally retiring in June 1984 However, it is the less obvious personal aspects of his life that the ‘gold nuggets’, the concern and compassion of his family life, his church, his community - are to be found. Nothing, for exam- ple illustrates his family side more than a grade three class Hafia the youngest of three children, and the only son. As a young boy, his parents taught him to read and write Ukrainian. A skill which was to prove very useful in later years. After having his education interrupted by army training in 1940 he graduated from the Uni- versity of Alberta in 1946 with a Bachelor of Education degree and taught for years in an Indian residential school. Here he learned one of his first lessons about power. It came at the end of his teaching session when he was out with a group of his boys. When they asked if he would be returning the following year, he was greatly flattered - until, that is, he admitted that he was leaving, whereupon his charges lit up their forbidden smokes in front of him. There is nothing to be feared from an abdicated king. aut BUDY Complete Body & Paint Facilities Auto Glass Replacement Towing 2316 - 6th Ave., Castlegar 365-5114 Airy Mountain Appliance Service call ONLY *20 For friendly service anytime call on, “The gz of Happiness”, submitted by Marnie, while Bill was commut- ing to Gonzaga University. In Bill's case it was five times - a humbling experience. Nothing beats parental support and encouragement in both profes. sional and family life While living in Castlegar he was an active member of the Rita's parish church, both as a charter mem ber of the Knights of Columbus and Father Brophy’s SHOULDER JOHN CHARTERS favourite lector He also played violin in the small Castlegar orchestra, and served as president of the Kiwanis Club, where he found many of his closest friends. For years as well, he chaired ‘all-candidates' meet- ings in Civic elections. In West Vancouver he became involved in the North Shore Safety Council, worked with the St. Anthony's Parish, and was very active out of gratitude, in various aspects of the Kidney Foundation. Despite failing health and con- stant pain, he continued with his voluntary services until he was no longer able to do so At home, in his leisure time, he enjoyed being walked by his Samoyed dog, Khila, and his greatest joy was his family, espe- cially his two young grandsons, Peter and Spencer. “Even as Dad suffered silently,” writes Bill, “I could see his eyes twinkle, and a smile upon his face when his grandsons were present.” See CHARTERS H&R BLOCK INCOME TAX COURSE PREPARES STUDENTS FOR A REWARDING CAREER EACH YEAR thousands of students earn money for their schoo! expenses by working as H&R prepare for this challenging work by enrolling in the H&R Block Income Tax Course BLOCK’S INCOME TAX COURSE PROVIDES them with hands-on experience preparing individual how to handle increasingly complex tax situations as the course progresses and they learn which tax strategies can save them the most money BLOCK’S EXPERIENCED INSTRUCTORS have trained thousands of tax preparers.
