Most of its downtown buildings date back to its ‘earliest beginnings: when it was a mining and transportation centre. It is now the home of a very unique and ‘exciting experiment. Heritage’ Canada in partnership with the city are undertaking a dynamic revitilization project of Nelson's downtown core. Called the ‘Main Street Programme, the project will take place over a three year period and is being monitored in or- der to serve as a model for other communities across’ the country. Many: small towns are in trouble. Highways, urban renewal, suburban sprawl, commercial strips and shop- ping malls have caused many main streets, the cofmmercial heart of the towns, to be abandoned or defaced beyond recognition. Main Street, as an architectural resource and thus, as a ‘tourist attraction, are under- developed. The Main Street Programme office is located at 280 Baker Street and its staff of four includes Hans Honegger, Bob Inwood, Donna Brown and Kathy Ireland.
