The long hours of training paid off for the members of the Stanley Humphries secondary Swimmers do well Trevor Seville. Four other SHSS Relay teams placed in the top eight finishers to earn valuable points in the team standings. The Boys 400 Freestyle Relay team made up of Neil JOnes, Tim Austin, James Welychko and Mario Fehrenberg was close behind SHSS’s winning time in fourth spot. Coach Ray Yule mixed and matched this foursome with Darren Dudley and Scott Sutherland resulting in two more placings in the Boys 200 Medley event and the Boys 200 Freestyle The Stanley Humphries Swim Team returned home from the High School Provincial Meet at UBC in Vancouver with two trophies and fistfull of medals. More importantly, the entire team turned in a solid effort to capture fourth spot out of 50 teams in the Speed Swimming “B” Division. Gold medals went to the Boys 400 Freestyle Relay Team made up of Jason Schuepfer, Trevor Seville, Gavin Ratke and Alex Hartman. The girls were not to be outdone as Jodi Young, McDowell, Aimie Chernoff and Wendy Gouk also posted a gold medal time in the 200 Medley Relay. After placing fifth in the elmination heats, the girls improved their time by seven seconds in capturing first spot. This same combination clicked again in the 200 Freestyle relay taking fifth spot. The woman who fed the Golden Jet, one of hockey's greatest scorers, and made meals for St. Louis sniper Brett Hull in his formative years, now is fixing dinners for one of the National Hockey League's hottest scorers. Trevor Linden, the Vancouver Canucks precocious 18-year-old rookie, is boarding in West Van couver with Hull, Bobby's ex-wife. On Tuesday, the six-foot-four right winger scored three goals — giving him seven in four games — as the surging Canucks beat the Buffalo Sabres for their third consecutive win. “There's an old cliche that youth is wasted on youth, well not in this kid's case,” said Vancouver coach Bob McCammon, who is running out of superlatives for the NHL's No. 2 draft choice last summer. “This kid just gave you a sample tonight, a little preview of what you're going to see here for years to come. “He's had some _ unbelievable games in the last week.” The strapping Linden, who cap tained two Medicine Hat Tiger teams to Memorial Cup junior hockey championships, started slowly this year while concentrating on his de- fensive play. But with 10 points in his last four games, including a three goal game in Minnesota, he's sud denly become an offensive force for a club known for its pop-gun attack. “It’s nice to see it starting to come,” said Linden. “I struggled there for eight or nine games. I knew it was just a matter of time so it's nice to see it finally going in.” Linden had given the Canucks a 2-0 lead over the Sabres with goals early in the first and second periods, but the Sabres rallied on markers by John Tucker and Phil Housley. Three minutes after Housley tied the score at 6:22 of the third, de- fenceman Paul Reinhart got the winner for Vancouver when his half-speed shot from the point on a Vancouver power play deflected off a Buffalo defenceman and through startled goaltender Darren Puppa’s legs Linden then iced the win before a crowd of 11,226 by hitting an empty net with 28 seconds remaining. The win moved Vancouver, 10-11-3, into fourth place in the tough Smythe Division, two points ahead of the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets, how ever, have six games in hand. “The team is finding a way to win and I think if we can continue, get over the .500 mark ... we're going to Shell ties By CasNews Staff Murray Pearson scored with 55 seconds left in the game to give Woodland Park Shell a 6-6 tie with Sandman Inn in CRHL play at the Community Complex on Monday. It was Pearson's second goal of the night. Sandman jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Pete Tischler scored back-to-back goals before teammate Barry Streliev found the net. Jim Paietz, Ian Ste- wart, Streliev, Frank Costa and Duane Wier picked up first period assists for Sandman. Shell jumped out of the gate in the second period, out-scoring Sandman 3-1 in the middle frame. Jim Naz aroff, Pearson and Kelly Keraiff scored the three Shell goals in the second. Pearson, Wayne Kinakin, Stan Mattell, Dan Friedel and Randy make it exciting,” said McCammon. He was especially pleased that the win came in what is traditionally a difficult contest for the well-travelled West Coast club — the first one back after an extended road trip. For the Sabres, 8-12-2, the loss was the fourth in a row — the previous three coming in one-goal games. They hit at least three goalposts against the Canucks and complained after the game that the breaks just aren't going their way. “The guys are working hard,” said Buffalo coach Ted Sator. “But we don't get any points for being good for the first 190 feet We've got to get the puck over the red line. “Somewhere along the~line when these games are on the line, some of our big players have got to break one for us. And they're going to do it.” Sandman Carlson provided the assists. Randy Martin was the lone scorer for Sandman in the middle frame. Streliev and Wier assisted. It was 4-3 Sandman after two. Sandman went to work early in the final period on Streliev's second goal of the night. Tony DaRosa and Mar tin assisted. But Shell came back with two goals to tie it. Friedel scored from Nazaroff and Keraiff got his second of the night on a play set up by Mattell and Brad Makortoff. Sandman's Martin got his second goal of the night with Streliev and Bob Essaunce assisting. But Sandman could not hold onto the ead as Shell's Pearson scored his second goal of the night to tie the game at six. Shell plays Hi Arrow Arms tonight at the Community Complex in the next CRHL contest. \nnuities.. Total penalty minutes in the game for Nelson were 25 and for Castlegar 11 minutes with Mike Hunter taking nine minutes of them. On Sunday, Castlegar met Beaver THREE POINTS Valley at the Complex.
