218 Wednesday February 3, 1993 Communication a key to learning Communication problems come in a wide variety of types and severity. i : Some children have difficulty in processing, storing and or- ganizing information in order to express themselves properly. Others may have a poor understanding of the meaning ofa word or word combinations such as: “There’s a fork in the road” might be interpreted as “There's a eating utensil in the road”. These children who have difficulty learning early language skills may be at risk for future academic learning problems. If left unrecognized and untreated until adulthood, poor lan- guage and communication skills could result in an inability to follow directions, using the phone properly or even ordering from a menu in a restaurant. In the past, emphasis has been placed on the child’s ability to speak orally. Fortunately, it is now recognized that the child’s ability to express their ideas is equally important. The Castlegar Chapter of the Learning Disabilities Associ- ation of B.C. will be sponsoring an information evening to ex- plore the relationship between early language disorders and learning disorders as well as the language used for communi- cation versus the language used for academic skills. Val Jaques, Speech and Language Pathologist, will be the guest speaker and will provide strategies used to facilitate the skills of children who are language-learning disabled. Everyone is welcome to attend on Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at Stan- ley Humphries Secondary School.
