WB Sailors take to the waters of Kootenay Lake for annual competition NEWS STAFF Although wind may play havoc with some sports, you wouldn't have heard any com- plaints from Kootenay Lake over the weekend. The annual Gray Creek Regatta took place Saturday through Labor Day, and chairman Kim Deane was quite happy with Mother Na- ture’s assistance. “From that point of view, it was one of the best we ever had,” he said. Deane said 26 boats were entered for this year’s race, down a bit from the yearly av- erage, adding some Osoyoos sailors who make the.annual trip to the lake’s east shore had prior commitments in the States. “If they had been here, it would have been normal,” he said. “We normally get about 30 to 40 boats.” Deane said boats entered in the regatta are divided in- to two classifications, cruisers and dinghies. Among the sailors partici- pating was local Randy Frost, who captured fourth place in the cruisers category. Meanwhile, over in dinghies, Robson’s Ross Scott took first in the catamaran class while Chris Chris- tiansen finished second. In the x-class, or miscella- neous group of dinghies, Tom Frost of Blueberry Creek fin- Local skippers finish in the money at Gray Creek Regatta ished first. Reached at home, Tom Frost was quite stunned at the news of his win while brother Randy was equally amused. “We didn’t think we’d done that well, so we headed out,” he laughed. “We've done bet- ter in the past, but we weren't disappointed because we hadn’t practiced this year.” Over in Robson, Scott was as equally laid back about his victory. “It was very simple, there were only two catamarans entered” he said. “My wife was in the other.” Deane said sailors came from as far away as Calgary and Whitehorse, with all en- joying the weekend of sailing. “It went really well.” Fauth checks out Czechoslovakia i Local hockey player comes home from tourney behind the Iron Curtain Jonathan Green SPORTS REPORTER Castlegar’s Rick Fauth spent a lot of time around Czechs last month, but he wasn’t doing payroll or work- ing at a bank. Fauth was a member of the under-16 B.C. Selects team that travelled to Czechoslova- kia last month for a eight- team hockey tournament in and around the nation’s capi- tal, Prague. He returned to town last week, the unhappy member of a team that finished eighth. “Everything we tried to do, we messed up on,” he said Tuesday, adding that some team members more interest- ed in sight-seeing weren't much help. “There were a couple of guys who were there just on a tourist trip and not to play hockey.” The Selects’ were one of three teams making the trip from Canada, the other two from Vancouver and Manito- ba. Fauth said each Canadian team played games against five Czech teams, with the re- sults determining where they placed in the finals. The Selects opened the torunament with a 5-2 loss to Skoda Plzen, then followed that with a 10-0 loss to Spar- ta Praha, ateam that featured eight 18-year-olds and four 19- year-olds. “That was kind of differ- ent,” Fauth said. The Selects put a win on the board in game three, 6-1 over Kladno Select, then lost a hard-fought 3-2 decision to Slavia Praha and a rather lop- sided 14-3 to HC Praha. “We took a pretty good shel- lacking in that game,” Fauth said. With the round-robin over, the Selects were drawn against Kladno Select, a team looking for and getting re- venge with a 5-3 win over the Canadians, who ended up eighth. In all, Fauth said the five Czech teams played the tradi- tional style of European hock- ey, one that seems to have each player and the puck mov- ing at the same time. “They play their hockey,” he said. “It was com- pletely free flow. “If you gave them the puck, it would end up behind you in your net so fast.” Fauth said one of the rea- sons the Czechs stressed so much puck movement is con- tact. “They don’t like to get hit,” he said. “They would avoid a check at all costs.” Though the trip is some- thing Fauth said he won't for- get soon, he said that ‘he’s quite happy to be back home, where television and a variety of good food aren’t hard to come by. “You start to appreciate (those things) that much more,” he said. But that doesn’t mean Fauth wouldn’t consider a re- turn to Czechoslovakia. “T’d like to go back in 25 or 30 years to see what they’ve done.” Rick Fauth 650 B.C. residents want you to consider organ and tissue donation Batis now before it's too late ...
