CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, August 23, 1973 ‘Castlegar District Among Those Struck by Defoliating Insects Defoliating insects are reported in record numbers in many areas of British Columbia, including the Castlegar district, according to the Canadian Forestry Service's mid-season report, Lew Fiddick of the Pacific Forest Research Centre at Victoria, supervisor of rangers for B.C,, states it's the first time in'20 years he has seen such a proliferation of defoliat- ing ‘insects throughout the ‘province, ‘The blackheaded budworm is epidemic throughout many of the western hemlock stands of northern Vancouver Island, and has’ been reported on the increase in some coastal areas of the Prince Rupert Forest District, Populations of the insect are lighter than in 1972 in the Neroutsos Inlet, Victoria and Benson Lake areas of Vanc- ouver Island, where spraying was carried out against the budworm in late June to protect trees against further defoliation and tree mortality. Elsewhere, in the Vane- ouver Forest District, infesta- tions of the spruce visible in the Fraser Canyon, Pemberton Valley and Sumallo River areas, In the Nelson Forest District the hemlock looper is epidemic in the mature and overmature western hemlock and western red cedar stands slong the Columbia River north of Revelstoke to Boat Encamp- ment, If climatic factors con- tinue to favor the insects’ development, severe defolia- tion may be expected. The larch casebearer con: tinues to infest large areas of western larch stands in the southern part of the district. Casebearers wee observed for the first time in the East Kootenays and at New Denver. The false hemlock looper and the Douglas-fir tussock moth infestations expanded in the Okanagan, The looper is epidemic in the North Okana- gan, particularly around Sal- mon Arm, Kalamalka and Woods Lakes and on the west side of Okanagan Lake. Tops of trees have been completely stripped of foliage in a 2'/-mile stretch along the hillsides southeast of Pletal Heavy Typical Street of a Village in South Wales Weekend Seminar on Human Sexuality — Scheduled in September at Selkirk College A weekend seminar on Human Sexuality” will be held at Selkirk College on Sept. 22 and 23, The seminar. Don Jamieson, Minis- ter of Regional Economic continued and defoliation was New Denver Guides Camp As Slocan Lake The first New Denver Guide Company enjoyed a week camping at the Slocan Lake Girl Guide campsite. ‘The weather was ideal and the girls enjoyed swimming, canoeing, handicrafts and some badge work, Division Commissioner Mrs. M. Bro supervised the camp while Mrs. Vera Angrig- non, captain of New Denver Company, was Commandant. Mrs. Catherine Wiens served as Quartermaster, Mrs, Row- ena Wilson and Mrs. Joan Law taught and supervised an interesting variety of handi- crafts, and Mrs. Ray Nunn instructed canoeing. Wilf Wilson and Phil Angrignon served as lifeguards while Miss Hilary Bitten kindly helped with swimming. The girls ended their happy (week at camp by spending their last night there under the stars. Many donations were re- ceived and were greatly appre- ciated by all who took part in the camp. | as larvae un ots Tussock moth populations have exploded in the central and north Okanagan. Approxi- mately 2,500 acres of Douglas- fir have been severely de- foliated near Westbank, Okana- gan Mission, and from Kelowna to Oyama. New infestations have been recorded on the east side of the Valley near Rutland, Winfield and Vernon. Severe defoliation may also be ex- pected in these areas. Large flights of forest tent caterpillar moths have been observed in many interior centres, Mr. Fiddick states that severe infestations in aspen, alder and other deciduous stands will occur in 1974. An unusual outbreak of the black army cutworm has caused severe damage to lodgepole pine and white spruce seedlings in many plantations in the interior of the province. The Canadian Forestry Service conducts an annual survey of forest insect’ and disease conditions in Canada. The B.C. regional survey is carried out by the staff of the Pacific Forest Research Centre at Victoria. Information pro- vided by the surveys enables the B.C. Forest Service and forest industrial companies to carry out timely controls of threatened stands. p d last week that Arvee Cedar Mills of Salmo has accepted a regional development incentive offer from his department for a new facility for the manufacturing of cedar shingles. The project is expected to create an estimated 114 jobs. The incentive of approxi- mately $219,000 is based on a rate of 10 per cent of the approved capital costs, esti- mated at $485,000 plus $1,500 for each job created. The offer. is subject to conditions specified under the provisions of the Regional Development Incentives Act. Conscience and Comment Prophecy: Book a Bestseller By Rev. K. Neill Foster We have nev- er used this space to review a book, but there is no reason not to do so. And right now there is a most unusual book on the newsstands, It is called “The Late Great Planet Earth", by Hal Lindsey. The book started out in Christian bookstores, but’ it wasn't long until it was being called for in supermarkets and elsewhere. Now the Bantam paperback edition makes it universally available-cheaply. Why the excitement? Well, for one thing, the book is about the future. Hamburger buns can easily be turned into onion buns by spreading your own onion butter on presliced buns. Wrap in foil and heat close to the coals. A simple onion-bun spread is butter mixed with any french onion soup to which a * litte water has been added. Or mix finely—chopped onion or onion powder with butter. Many factors must be . considered in timing meats rotissed on the barbecue. The ~ weather, for example, may cool + meat more than usual. The heat from the coals may vary. A breeze can interfere with direct heat. When rotissing, coals should be placed at the back of the barbecue to avoid flare-ups caused by fat dripping onto the coals, To catch the fat, form a drip pan out of foil and place it under the rotissing meat. Ideally, meat for the rotisserie should be regular in shape, contain no bones and be firmly rolled and tied. Ir- regularly shaped and weighted roasts will unbalance the spit ill result, prophecies, Mr. Lindsey first establishes their accuracy in the past. For example, events were often prophesied in advance in great detail. In one case a ruler’s name was given hundreds of years before he was born. And, Lindsey re- minds his audience, the pro- phecies about the future will be accurate too. The author also makes it clear that biblical prophecy is distinct from the Jean Dixon type. While Mrs. Dixon may allow herself a percentage of error, the prophecy of the Bible cannot be in error in even one detail, according to Lindsey. He also maps out World War III, describes the antics of the coming Anti-Christ, and takes one chapter for Armaged- don, Necessarily his views are interpretive in some parts, and probably not all. Christians would agree with him on every point, But Hail Lindsey has popularized biblical prophecy. Don't bother with the book unless you are interested in the future. Local Churches Give Aid to West ‘Africa: Countries: The churches of this area are helping the drought- stricken countries of West Africa. A number of concerned Christian people here have made contributions, through their own denomination and through the Hunger Supper held just before Easter, to the development and relief funds of the various churches. These funds are being drawn-upon to help toward medical aid, seed, artesian wells, reforestration and agricultural information for the stricken area. Such aid is being given through the religious com- munity in each country, in- cluding Muslims, Catholics and Protestants, in cooperation with government agencies. Heads of Canadian chur- ches will shortly approach our own federal government urging an expansion of aid to the six countries concerned. One reason the govern- ment listens to the churches on such matters is the fact that church members are backing such recommendations with their own cash and personnel. Want to Sell Your House?
