216 Wednesday, August 26, 1992 @ Rossland dumps Devils @ Dynamos get first win as WKMSL resumes play NEWS STAFF There’s an old adage that tells us to ‘forgive and forget’, but the Castlegar Hi Arrow Devils ran into a group that thinks differently on Sunday. Playing in their first West Kootenay Men's’ Soccer League game of the season’s second half, the Devils were up against Rossland, a team they trounced 12-0 on June 14. But any hopes of repeating the punishment were gone early on, as the Devils found themselves trailing 3-0 at the half. Devils goalie Evo Amaral was the helpless victim of two own goals, with the third com- ing on a corner kick. Coach Carlos Amaral said his team came out with visions of the last game in mind, and by half time, that kind of play had them down by three. “I was very angry at half time,” he said. “I said ‘You guys got yourselves into this mess and now it’s up to you to get your- selves out.” Amaral’s wrath was obviously felt, as the Devils replied soon after Carlos Amaral with goals from Herb Amaral on a penalty shot and Rob Matjasic off a corner kick. But any hopes of pulling one from the fire faded when Fernando Amaral rang a penalty shot off the crossbar late in the second half. Coach Amaral said the game wasn’t as much a case of Rossland winning as it was the Devils losing. “(Rossland) didn’t deserve the two points, but they got them and we got zilch,” he said. “I can understand us los- ing to Nelson but not to Ross- land. “These kinds of games should be two points for us.” Meanwhile, the Castlegar Dexter’s Dynamos ended any speculation of their demise by fielding a team for their match against Frutivale, yet showing up really wasn’t necessary. The locals picked up their first win of the season the easy way Sunday when Fruitvale defaulted. ; Both teams return to action on Sept. 13, when the Dy- namos will be looking to avenge a season-opening 4-3 loss to the Devils. Mi Kootenay Cocoons looking good for medals NEWS STAFF Some West Kootenay se- niors will descend on’Dawson Creek this week looking to pick up some precious metals, but it won’t be from the mines. Starting today and ending Saturday, the northern min- ing city will host the B.C. Se- niors Games, and some 100 local athletes will be there do- ing their best for Zone 6 in events ranging from bag pip- ing to i bridge. will be 13 members of the Kootenay Cocoons swim club, Kootenay Cocoons Bill Deklerk takes a breather during Seniors Games training Monday. Seniors head north for annual games including the Castlegar hus- band and wife team of Bill and Marg Van Yzerloo. The Van Yzerloos will be looking to repeat the success they both enjoyed at the Mas- ters Swim Championships in May in Duncan, winning nine medals between them. As well, 13 members of the club picked up 53 medals at last year’s games in Coquit- lam, and Marg is hopeful that feat can be repeated. “We've been getting lots of help from our coaches,” she said. “We hope to do well, but you never know who's going to be there.” Open to B.C. residents 55 years old and and over, the en News photo by Neil Rachynski games will attract competi- tors from all areas of the province and Van Yzerloo says, not: surprisingly, the swimmers will face some heavy competition from the Lower Mainland and Vancou- ver Island. “There are some pretty good senior swimmers in the province, she said. “with most from the Coast and the Is- land.” This year marks the fifth time the games have been held, and Van Yzerloo says she sees no end to the num- ber of games she or any the Cocoons will attend. “As long as we keep Steelers upend Unknowns to win some slo-pitch cash W@ Trail Steelers capture local year-end slo-pitch tournament and make $750 trip to the bank Jonathan Green SPORTS REPORTER The Trail Steelers came to the Castlegar slo-pitch league’s year-end money tournament this weekend at Kinnaird Park and stole the show. Putting on an incredible display of offense, the Steel- ers laid an 11-0 licking on the upstart. Unknowns in the second-game of the final to take home the $750 top prize. The local Unknowns had beaten the Steelers 5-2 in the first game of the final, forcing the sudden death second game. Unknowns coach and tournament organizer Tom Campbell said his squad sim- ply ran out of gas in game two and had to settle for the runner-up’s $550 prize. “By the time the second game started, we were play- ing our sixth game of the day,” he said. “We just couldn’t hit the ball and (the Steelers) did.” Steelers coach John Mota said there was no secret to his team’s success. “We just had a good bunch guys who get along really well that hit the ball,” he said. Undefeated heading into the final, Mota said the five- hour wait between their final round-robin game and the first game of the final took its on toll on his team. “There was a long wait (between games),” he said. “We were waiting around do- ing nothing and you really stiffen up.” But once the Steelers worked out the first-game kinks, Mota said they put the 10-run mercy rule to work in game two. “It took us a full game to get it going,” he said. “The bats came alive in the second game and we won it in the fifth inning.” Campbell said apart from a little rain on Saturday, the $1,625 tournament went off without a hitch. “Everything went smooth- ly,” he said. “I think every- body had a good time.” The Kaslo Screeners took home third-spot in the tour- ney, picking up $325 for their trouble. | Act Welcome Back.
