The entertainment given at the Methodist church last night by a party of negro jubilee singers, the Nashville Students, was quite a surprise to many who were present, being above the aver- age of such performances, and an un- 0 | doubted local treat.—Salt Lake Herald. |_ —— THE NASHVILLE STUDENTS. Cali on them at Clark, Good & Co. Columbis avenne, Rossiand. tf business men who are active of the Sabbath Observance society, have weighed the consequences of a rigid en- forcement of a Sunday law in Rossland. This city has won an enviable reputation for law and order, its church steeples and close observance of the rights and privileges of church going people, and it ecems out of place and ill-timed to agitate the subject of Sunday closing. Ifthere was any fisgrant violation of the Sabbath there would be an excuse for the existance of this society. The bars are all run in connection with hotels and are and must be open to the guests of the house. The outside doors are anl always have been closed on the Sabbath, and the town qniet and orderly. The stores are closed, save a few that open in the morning to ac- comodate miners and prospectors who must leave town on that day. It is im- practicable and expensive for the mines to stop their machinery every seventh day. The Recoxp has always stood for law and order and a reasonable observance of the Sabbath, and demanded respect and consideration for church going peo- ple, but we think the object and pur- poses of the Sabbath Opeervance League are going beyond reason at this time. —_—_—_ The meeting of the business men and members of the board of trade this evening at the city hall should be well attended. So far but lit- tle good has come out of this organiza- tion because it has been inactive. There are public questions which could be handled by the board to the benefit of Roesland and this district, if it is made up of the right kind of material. Whenever any such advertisements appear in a Ross- land paper you can rest assured that they are not paying over one-half what you are charged. ee “Columbia Avenue,” who is kicking about a httle dirt being thrown in the street by the fellow who is building the brick building opposite his place, should try and lay burdens npon any one who would attempt to build these hard times, eo they would stop, or move to the other end of town, All the rock and dirt that has been put in the street in the erec- tion of the new Recorp brick and stone building is being put there by permis- sion of the authorities and has widened out the grade and improved the street even if it does rain. —_—_——— W.
