thought I was joking. I was on the bottom for three
minutes.”

Hartley now is a quadriplegic.

Each year an estimated 2,000 Canadians become
paralysed from a spinal cord injury; the majority of
those accidents happen in summer.

When the weather is warm more people dive and
rough-house in unknown waters. More people drink and
drive or go for a spin on a motorcycle without a helmet.
More people climb a ladder to paint the house or fix the
eaves.

“In the first week of July we had 10 spina! cord
injuries in six days,” said Dr. Peter Wing, orthopedic
surgeon at the Shaughnessy Hospital spinal cord unit.

“It is very timely to warn people about spinal injury
now — so often it happens to active people in the prime of
their life.”

After breaking his neck, Hartley spent a week in
Shaughnessy's intensive care, then moved to the spinal
cord unit. He was in tong traction fer five weeks — two

“The tragedy is that so often the injury was one that
could have been prevented — wearing a seatbelt,
securing a ladder, checking out the waters before you
dive in,” Wing said.

fieant factor in the cause of about one-third of all spinal
cord injuries, but the damage to the spinal is much worse

monthly payments which grew over the years to $1,200.
Last month, they were bumped up to $1,700.

Molson and Sehlichter say they are waiting to hear from
a lawyer to find out what can be done about freeing his
money from the trust.

Neither Royal Trust nor the Molsons will comment on
the trust in Andy's name. But it contains stock in Noranda
Mines, Molson Breweries, Southam Inc., Bell Canada and
Canadian Pacific.
