It’s one of the questions that will be addressed by the newly created University of British Columbia Entrepre- neurship and Venture Capital Research Centre. “The unprecedented growth in the formation of new ventures over the past decade has been the source of the majority of newly created jobs in this province,” said Commerce and Business Ad- ministration Professor Raphael Amit, the centre’s di- rector. “Unfortunately, the failure rate of new businesses is Venture capital firms base their investment and deal- pricing decisions largely on rules of thumb with little or no theoretical justification, said Amit. “Social science research provides us with few insightS into the essence of entrepre- neurship, the environments that foster the most successful entrepreneurial activities, ‘and what role government should play,” he said.
