a2 ’ Saturday, February 22, 1992 @ @ Famed Vancouver Children’s Choir set to perform on March 7 Few youthful ensembles can lay claim to such a panoply of concert achieve- ments as the Vancouver Chil- dren’s Choir. The 40-member choir, ranging in age from 10 to 17, has been performing since 1983, establishing land- marks on the provincial mu- sical scene with concerts, recordings, film tracks from major international movies, guest spots at Expo ’86, ap- pearances with the Vancou- ver Symphony Orchestra and a command performance for Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Its most recent achieve- ment was a second-pace fin- ish out of 37 entries at last’ July’s Llangollen Interna- tional Eisteddford competi- tion-in Wales, a prestigious invitation-only event created after World War II to en- courage world peace. Under the leadership of Rupert Lang, the choir has become a rich source of musi- cal enjoyment for a growing audience of choral enthusi- asts. The choir’s programs, in Brilliant gears up for choral visitors many languages, range from great choral masterpieces to upbeat and contemporary works. Lang, who also conducts the Christ Church Cathedral Choir, frequently composes works for both_choirs._His constant cry to his young mu- sical charges is “Heads up and smile!” And anyone who hears the choir knows at once that their heads are forever held high with musical price in their ensemble. And as to the smile — well, it is simply in- escapable. Music lovers in the-West Kootenay will be given the opportunity to hear the choir live on March 7th at the Bril- liant Cultural Centre as the Castlegar Arts Council spon- sors a one-performance-only presentation, beginning at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are avail- able from Carl’s Drugs and Pharmasave in Castlegar and from L and J Books in Trail. The youngsters have also thrown in the odd dance or two as they try to coax Mrs. Sun out of hiding.
