In a review of the bitter dispute that arose between the IWA and the two pulp unions during contract negotiations, Mr. Munro told the opening session of the annual conven- tion of the IWA's western region: “(From now on) we'll make our own decisions, not the damned B.C. Federation of Labor or anybody else.” Mr. Munro was referring to an attempt by the labor federation secretary-treasurer, Len Guy, to bring the three unions together again, after the liaison committee had broken down. The committee split when the two pulp unions went out on strike last July 16, while the IWA asked its members to stay on the job during hearings conducted by special mediator Mr. Justice Henry Hutcheon, Hostility increased when the pulp unions began picketing IWA operations and IWA lead- ers openly criticized the pulp unions’ bargaining demands. The liaison committee was set up last spring to co-ordinate strategy among the forest unions during a common bar- gaining year. Mr. Munro said, “The IWA thought we were getting close to one union in wood but then we were double-crossed. “Finally, we. stood alone |. while they (the: pulp unions) conviriced others they knew what they were doing. They never convinced us.” Mr. Munro added the B.C. Federation of Labor now sup- ports the position taken by the wa. The regional officers’ re- port to the convention also took some pointed pot-shots at the pulp unions, “It was apparent from the first encounter that any chance of co-operation (among the three unions) was doomed to * failure,” the report said. “The long history of raid- ing and counter-raiding, along Winter Sports Fun But There Are Dangers Winter sports are fun for everyone, but they can be dangerous. Would you know what to do if you feil through the ice on a river or lake? The Red Cross water safety service offers these tips. Don't panic, Extend your hands and arms onto the ice surface ahead of you. Gently kiek your legs out behind you to maintain a level position. Then slide or squirm forward onto the ice. Do not stand. Your concentrated weight could cause the ice to break again. Avoid accidents this winter. If you're not sure the ice is safe, keep off. A fall through the ice on a lake or river is not only shocking. It can be fatal—even if you are rescued within a few minutes. Muscles contract, blood circulation slows down and body falls ONIONS FRESH GREEN FAB rapidly. If it drops from its normal 98.6 degrees to 85 degrees, life is in danger. That's why the Red Cross urges that an ice accident victim be rushed to a shelter immediate- with the vast differences in unton philosophies created an aura of distrust and in some instances, open hostility, on the part of those representing the organizations.” The first cracks, according to the report, arose over the prospect of third party inter- vention in negotiations. The IWA was not opposed to the idea, bul the pulp unions were firmly against it. Said the report: “Con- tinued discussion, which in- eluded unwarranted debase- ment, indicated clearly (this split). The IWA agreed to abide by majority decision.” The IWA again went along with the majority decision in the setting of the July 16 strike deadline. But the IWA_ resisted going out on strike after Labor Minister Bill King appointed Mr. Justice Hutcheon as special mediator. The officers’ report said pulp union leaders Reg Ginn basswood and orange blossoms are some of the common sources, Honey can replace sugar, cup for cup, in puddings, custards and pie fillings, breads and rolls.
