TORONTO (CP) — Despite numerous studies and
tests there are still no clear answers as to whether water
from industrially polluted areas across Canada is safe to
drink over a lifetime.

A senior Environment Canada official says that while
there is no evidence tap water from Lake
Ontario will harm anyone over a couple of years, “the risk
becomes greater as you extend the time.”

And Ontario's Environment Minister, Keith Norton,
says he continues to drink tap water, but “I am very
uneasy about what could develop.”

The debate on water quality involves a complex mix
of science, medicine, engineering and politics and re-
cently there has been growing concern in all areas.

Those concerned point to tonnes of toxic chemicals
getting into the water supply despite billions of dollars
spent on sewage control, widespread cancer in Great
Lakes fish, insufficient research and weak toxic guide:

Lake Otario is a focal point in Canada:for concerns
about drinking water, but the toxic chemicals measured
there are just the visible tip of a chemical iceberg threat-
ening waters in industrial and agricultural areas around
the world.

WORRIES TOWN ¢

One Ontario town that worries a lot about the
chemical cocktail is picturesque Niagara-on-the-Lake, at
the mouth of the Niagara River.

More than 100 chemical sewers pour into the river
before it empties into Lake Ontario. Two hundred
chemical dumps, including the world’s largest known
