Being adopted is great “What do you mean, I was just born into my family?” de- manded my grandson, Josh. “I mean you didn’t get to be adopted, like I was,” replied his friend, Christopher. “Yeah, it’s kind of great, isn't it?” commented my adopted son, Mike. “That makes three of us, doesn’t it?” added his twin brother, Peter. “Hey, don’t forget me!” put in their friend, Steve. “Re- member, I’m adopted too!” We realized then that of the seven of us sitting around the kitchen table at our summer cottage a few weeks ago, only my daughter-in-law, Carole, my grandson and I had come into our families by birth. The other four had all been adopt- ed. Thus began a very interest- Guest s * Pulpit & Pew Grace Presbyterian Church ing conversation on the merits of adoption. To make it even more inter- esting, the adoption of Peter, Michael and Christopher had created inter-racial families, as the three of them are ethni- cally Chinese. Rev. Murray GARVIN ker: Charlotte Dyck holds the attention of members peal of the Christian Women’s Club during their meeting Sept. 12. Club seeks auction donations The Rainbow Connection was the theme for Christian Women’s Club meeting Sept. 12 at the Fireside Motor Inn. The women were encour- aged by Charlotte Dyck, who has had extensive training and experience in wardrobe training, color theory and analysis, figures and line anal- ysis, personality dressing and self-esteem development. As an inspirational speaker, Dyck stressed that everyone is loveable and everyone is loved, the club said in a news release. Alicia Lust of Castlegar and Bev Moon of Trail were the soloist features. The theme for next month's meeting will be “Come to the Fair” when the fifth annual Dutch auction will be held. Contributions of crafts, baking, canning, etc., will be appreciated. Proceeds from the auction goes to a mission- ary couple as a Christmas pre- sent. The meeting will take place Oct..10 at 7 p.m. at the Fire- side. A light supper will be served. Patsy Mae White, a former Las Vegas singer from Wash- ington, will be the featured soloist. The guest speaker, Betty Sang, is also from Ws ington. Everybody agreed that adoption was a good thing. The four who had experienced adoption (and known about it since earliest childhood) all felt that it made them feel spe~ cial, that they had been want- ed and chosen by their adop- tive parents. They had felt love in a special way. All this talk about families and the way many people en- ter them by adoption remind- ed me that being “in family” is what Christianity is all about — being in the family by adop- tion. The apostle Paul, who, ofall people, knew that he had be- come a part of the Christian family by the grace of God, spoke plainly of this in his let- ters to the churches in Rome and Galatia. The point is that God loves us, wants us, and chooses us. That is, we are adopted into the family of God. This is of supreme impor- tance these days when so many feel alienation, loneli- ness and non-acceptance. If you are not now feeling included in the Christian fam- ily, I sincerely suggest that you find a church.where you can feel wanted, loved and accept- ed.
