There are also assorted areas of rock and weeds in between. In fact, I understand, that the city owns about six acres of non-revenue producing land inthe the possible exception of Alicia ‘g's beauty parlor, not too fancy. Still, they matched the quiet rural aspect of the town. The few roads were unpaved and dusty but the people who used them knew in a very real sense the answer to the question “Who is my neighbor?” and cooperation was high on their list of priorities. The highway was a torturous, black ribbon connecting Castlegar to Trail — a supplement to the train. Then the town began to grow up and it lost its innocence. The CPR passenger service was discontinued and the station no longer the centre of focus. Many of the buildings on both sides of Front Street disappeared — the CPR buildings, the Castlegar Hotel, the town office, the Goresky home and garden and other private dwellings, St. Rita’s, and the community hall. Some were replaced, some weren't. In fact, I doubt that there are any more buildings on that block between Columbia Avenue and the tracks now than there were 40 years ago. There is, however, an awful lot of non-revenue producing space, some terrible looking buildings and remains of buldings and a municipal works yard which does not belong in the heart of a city. The shops on the right have no feeling of unity or cohesion and if one ventures to the back -<.di If on the other hand, one turns left on 8rd Street and attempts to park in the alleged parking lot one has an unobstructed view of Lower Dogpatch. If one ventures (as a stranger in area — a sad situation for an administration sorely in need of funds. Yet, this rot at the core need not time limit, they tend to become self-perpetuating i ieties in the ibility and of resp action. I well remember how the simple but repeated request for directional signs for Zuckerberg Island whirled around between three committees for two years before one person in authority took over and had the job done in three weeks. 1 am indifferent also to political manoeuverings and rir I saw a prop mtown plan recently which visuali g the centre of the town into a mall. Personally, I am not a propoent of malls, but we cannot turn back the clock. This plan visualized canopying the walks around 3rd Street, Columbia Avenue and 4th Street and developing the area behind the shops. . It also proposed the construction of an adjoining two-level mall on the city-owned property with entrances on 13th Street and Columbia Avenue, upgrading city hall and relocating and centralizing some of the services in the elipticat property below the Castleaird Plaza. It also allows for future expansion in nearby areas. The CP rail station would be moyed across the tracks within the proxi of the and again claim its rightful part as an essential part of the city's past. The parking lot next door would be a real parking lot. The proposal has merit, it could get government facade and redevelopment backing, and I think it has some answers to some very vexing problems. I hope the _Plap, will be. Precgpted coor jn the proper quarters and ‘committees and ‘studied with some sense of urgency, though I don’t have toom much faith in many committees. Born Oct. 10, 1903 in Veri- gin, Sask., he moved with his parents. to Brilliant in the early 1900s and lived there all of his life. He started working as an errand boy for Peter “Lord- ly” Verigin and later worked in the head office of the Hf ” which can destroy peoples towns and nations. I am concerned, however, about the place in which I have lived a brief 40 years and I see an urgent necessity for hard planning and co-operation if th eoriginal sense of oneness and attractiveness as a town is to be recaptured. One of the fables of Aesop the slave tells of a father who had several sons. These young men spent 80 much time bickering and quarreling among themselves that their once prosperous family farm was in serious decline. The father called his sons to him, gave each of them in turn a bundle of sticks which he had tied together with a cord, and invited them to break the sticks. All tried and declared the task impossible. The father then took the bundle, removed the cord and’ broke each of the sticks separately. A small lesson on unity of purpose. Something else beside our sense of beauty that we can lose if we don't look with newly-opened eyes at things about us every hour. Besides, as editor Ron Norman wrote in a recent editorial, other communities had already revitalized their downtowns. If we are to remain competitive, we must do the same. P.S.
