If humans came in five gen- ders, then sexual preferences wouldn't even be an issue. So many variations would be possible, none would be too shocking. All the interesting combinations for relationships would give us far more to dis- cuss. Relationship choices would Radical Times be more low-key, like career Barbara URDOCH choices. Most important, if we had more genders, then gen- der roles would fade in impor- tance. The expectations that we now have for just females or males would be minimized, more like matters of style... like wearing black shoes or a hat. It wouldn't much matter. Some of the earliest re- search done on gender roles looked at what attributes were considered truly masculine and those that were regarded as feminine. The healthiest, most well- adjusted people were those in the middle on the masculine- feminine scale. Those who had a moderate share of both fem- imine and masculine traits were better able to function in everyday life.
