ment says a new formula that
allows plastic to be detected
on X-ray film is a major
breakthrough for consumers
— especially parents of small
children.

Most plastics don’t show
up on an X-ray but after five
years of research, the world’s
largest toymaker, Mattel

. has developed a formula
that allows their plastic prod-
ucts to be detected on X-ray
film.

“The problem has been one
of our biggest concerns,” said
Dr. Kamlesh Gupta, of the
department's product safety
branch.

“We were anxious to see
some remedial action and this
is certainly a move in the
right direction.”

Gupta said his department
does not have statistics on
how many children become ill
or die because the plastic
toys they swallow are not
detected on X-rays.

But he said physicians
have long been complaining
about the problem, parti-
cularly in recent years as
toymakers use more and
more plastic parts in their
products.

Usually, the piece of plastic
swallowed by a child comes
up in a fit of coughing or
passes through the system
without causing harm.

But in some cases, the part
can lodge in a vital area of the
body, like the respiratory
tract, lungs, or gastro-intes-
tinal tract

“In essence, we approach
free agency with the view
that there should be more
flexibility for the players and
the clubs, a free market
without restrictions,” Fehr
said. “The system doesn’t al
ways operate that way.

‘We have to see what
changes should be made.”
Fehr said the union had
made no proposals for
changes yet. “But I could
write something right now.”

covered salary arbitration,

VANCOUVER (CP) — As a member of St. Louis Blues
checking line, right winger Mark Reeds’ primary job is to
shut down the opposing team's top scorers.

But with the punchless Vancouver Canucks providing
the opposition Tuesday night, Reeds turned the tables
scoring three goals and assisting on another as the Blues
opened a five-game National Hockey League road trip with a

5-1 victory.

“Being mainly a checker you don't get that much media
coverage, so if you have a big night here or there that just
lifts your spirits a little bit and makes all the checking
worthwhile in the long run,” said the 24-year-old Burlington,
Ont., native who capped the first three-goal game of his
NHL career with a shorthanded goal in the third period

“I got the puck, maybe I'll put it back on my mother's

shelf back home in Toronto.”

“We wanted to protect Mike and that’s why we came
out checking so well,” said Demers. “We didn't give up the
blueline and that’s important when you've got guys like
(Patrik) Sundstrom and (Thomas) Gradin, because they can

burn you.”

Liut said the key was keeping the Canucks off balance
“Generally, we didn't let them buzz us in our own end
and hem us in,” he said. “We broke their forechecking, made
some good plays coming out of our own end and that took the

pressure off us.”

The loss for the Canucks’ before a hostile crowd of 9,979
brought Vancouver to the quarter-mark of the season with
just four wins. Their young, disaster-prone defence, on
which opposing teams have feasted, again coughed up the
puck in key situations, leading directly to two of Reeds’

goals

But with the defence struggling. giving up a league-high
six goals a game, the offence isn't helping.

“We got a lot better body contact tonight, but our
offensive production wasn’t there at all and Mike Liut had a
pretty easy night,” said a dejected LaForge

Hard work is the only way out of the slump, he said, but
that doesn’t seem to be getting the club anywhere.

“It seems that skates are sinking deeper and deeper
into the ice. We tried really hard but we got nowhere. That's

what's frustrating to me.”

Hurd leads Rebels
to first road victory
of KIJHL season

Castlegar Rebels won their
first road game of the season
Tuesday night when they
beat hometown Beaver Val
ley Nite Hawks 9-7.

Kelly Hurd led the Rebels
scoring with a three-goal
performance.

Beaver Valley scored the
first goal of the game at 7:45
of the first period. Castle
gar’s first goal by Randy Sal
ekin was a good passing play,
a two on one from Dave
Perehudoff.

The Nite Hawks at 14:36
scored a goal almost identical
to its first one when the
player was allowed to stand
in the slot and a second
player behind the net passed
to the first player who got a
clear shot at the open net.

At 16:37 the Rebels got
their first man advantage
and Kevin Biln scored on a
pass from Hurd, to make the
score 2-2.

In the second period, Bea
ver Valley scored its third
goal at 2:15, a two on two.

The third Rebel goal came
at 4:10 when Perehudoff
scored ona pass from Salekin
and Rob Tamelin. Salekin got
adribbler shot into the goalie
and Perehudoff, on a good
second effort, tucked the
puck into the net. At this
time, Salekin injured his fin
ger and was rushed to Trail
Regional Hospital. Salekin
was doing well up until his
injury

At the seven-minute mark,
there was a small flare-up
between Rod Horcoff and
Jack Kanigan of the Rebels
and two Beaver Valley play-
ers. Each player received
four minutes for roughing.

During the four on four,
the Rebels had many scoring
chances, but there were no
goals.

Dave Terhune, who was
moved from forward to de
fense because of a shortage of
players, due to flu and in-
juries, shone in the game.
Beaver Valley scored its
fourth goal at 11:18. The
Rebels were guilty of sloppy
puck control. The goal was a
result of a scramble in front
of the net.

Hurd scored for the Rebels
at 14:32 on a pass from Rod
Horcoff and Ken Hoodicoff.

The Nite Hawks scored
their eighth goal at 15:57, a
long wrist shot that goal.

awarded a penalty for check
ing from behind, giving the
Rebels a two-man advantage.
While on the advantage,
Kevin Biln scored the sev
enth goal for the Rebels.
Perebudoff and Terhune as
sisted on Biln's good shot
from the circle.

The Rebels’ eighth goal
came when Adrian Markin,
standing out at the blue line,
passed the puck to Horcoff,
resulting in a good three-way
passing play, which allowed
Hoodicoff to score from
Hurd.

Beaver Valley came back
within one goal at 16:57
Beaver Valley exerted a lot
of pressure in the last few
minutes of the game.

of Hoodicoff, who fell and
blocked a shot to the Rebel
blue line. He got up and
skated with the puck to cen.
