A child might create one of these, but would not be able to give it the meaning Andersen does. These images or figures make — important cultural and symbolic Statements. Some of Andersen's works have back- gtounds in unfinished or nearly- dull states. This approach is not artistic failure but is in fact a spe- cific technique—a movement away from sophistication and a kind of “dressing down”. Things in life are not always polished or why not that ‘concept in tbs artistic tech- nique itself! Whether or not you liked the show probably depended upon your tastes. Sometimes I'm not sure if I'm being conned or an} in fact witnessing unique artistry. The show borders on anti-art in the way that “happenings” or per- formance theatre spin off of regu- lar events or mainstream theatre Yet the experience of having the mind engaged as well as the sens- es is worth the visit to the Centre Artists have always been striv ing, to undercut standard, estab: lished approaches and Andersen's works do just that This is most true of the metal figures and wall plaques on dis+ play. He has created a number of rusty-tin images, sometimes free- standing and sometimes on small wooden backdrops. In all of these pieces, the effect of state- ment is far more important than the “beauty” of the piece or how it’s mounted. WHERE SIT... GORDON TURNER SUN STAFF PHOTO / Jeff Gabert Courtney Andersen's exhibit of “mad” art at the NEC is drawing plenty of attention. Gordon Turner says some pieces have the effect of Indian rock paintings. If you stand back a ways from these rusty pieces—reddish- brown on white backgrounds they are like Rorschak drawings. You get to pick out the image and interpret it the way you see fit. By itself, it makes no sense. But linked with another canvas show- ing three young children playing amidst flowers, its point begins to emerge The children are dark figures on a bare white background, and they seem to be moving upwards to be engulfed by the green-ness of the canvas above. Obviously, Andersen is emphasizing the chil- dren’s innocence as they move forward to experience the won- ders of childhood and perhaps the glorious green of spring. 0 the left of these two pieces in the grouping is a tiny painting of a flame of fire against a white The Pass Creek of Recreation Commission would like to thank board. In association with the previous two pieces, the artist is saying that beyond hope and innocence is fire—a possibly destructive force One day the now innocent children may get burned. Enjoy the life ahead, but beware! Some of the images are a bit too wonky or bizarre for most of us. We won't readily rush out to buy these works, but Andersen himself admits that’s not the point. He’s not interested in sales. He wants to challenge our imagi- nations and have us look again at the culture surrounding us. As such, this type of so-called “mad” art has its place. Andersen’s show moves on to Grand Forks soon, but a display entitled Doukhobor Women’s Work featuring artifacts and early 20th century photographs will replace it. SUN STAFF PHOTO /Karen Kerkhoff ARROW LAKES FLOODING Seniors seek compensation JACK KELLY Sun Seniors Columnist The Castlegar Seniors Group is not letting any grass grow under its feet in the matter of seeking compensation for the inconveniences and hardships inflicted on some members when it was decided to flood the Arrow Lakes and harness the Columbia River for power. Now that the matter of compen- sation is being brought to the fore, the upsetting of these people's lifestyles calls for compensation. That was the major theme at a recent membership m: ag of the Senior Citizens. Every effort must be made to ensure that these people affected be adequately compensated. The executive of the seniors’ group was instructed to take every appropriafe action to see that those members affected are not forgotten Other matters discussed con cerned the sorry condition of the present Seniors Hall It was agreed that the need for another hall is urgent. Ways and means of attaining this were widely discussed. Elsewhere, a meeting sched- uled for March 15 with Rossland- Trail MLA Ed Conroy to discuss seniors’ concerns was called off. One of those glitches that so often impedes human relations occurred that made it impossible for Mr. Conroy either to attend or to notify the seniors. Naturally, disappointment was keen among those many senior citizens what had been at pains to attend this expected meeting in large numbers. Meanwhile, the group’s social activities carried on as usual with a St. Patrick's Day coffee party during which a raffle was held for an Irish Doll dressed in the rakish fashion of the Emerald Isle. On March 25 one of the popu- lar flea markets was staged at the hall in the morning and a pot- luck supper later in the day. There will be a report on this event in next months’ column.
