It is one of the advantages of syn- dicated surrogate motherhood Johnston has figured out a way to enjoy the perks of being a mother — choosing a name, providing nur- turing environment — without the liabilities, the drippy diapers and 4 a.m. feedings. She'll leave the stretch marks and the dirty work to her comic-strip countegpart, Elly Patterson, frazzled heroine of For Better or For Worse, Johnston's daily strip, which is syn- dicated to over 700 newspapers worldwide. “Jim Unger (creator of the Her- man cartoons) says I’m the only woman to make another woman pregnant,”’ says Johnston Elly Patterson is pregnant. Lynn Johnston is not. One rounded stroke of Johnston’s pen has upset almost 12 years of near perfect symmetry between the Johnston family and the Pattersons. The Pattersons have Lizzie, nine and Michael, 14. The Johnstons have Katie, 12, and Aaron, 17 Father and Mother Patterson, both 30-something, are John, a den tist, and Elly, an exasperated and uncertain but loving and constant veteran of family living. Mom and Dad Johnston are Rod, 41, a dentist, and Lynn, 43 The Patterson family pet is Farley, an English Sheepdog. The Johnston family pet was an English sheepdog named Farley, but is now a spaniel named Willie. Until now, Willie was the only minor hitch in the parallel course of the families Patterson and Johnston, and that, frankly, was beyond John- ston’s control. The pregnancy, which has thrown poor Elly completely for a loop, is another matter “I looked at my daughter in a bathing suit this summer, and I thought, ‘My God, I have no more babies,’ ’’ said Johnston, in Ottawa last week to promote her latest collection, If This is a Lecture, How Long Will It Take? It's a common mid-life longing which most women manage to con- trol. Johnston figured she didn’t have to. “This is the only way to have babies. I wish I’d thought of it earlier Perhaps her fertility had outside influences. After all she still lives and works in Corbeil, Ont. just outside North Bay, where the family moved in 1984 from Lynn Lake, Man. Corbeil is spitting distance from Callender, which became a Disneyland-like shrine to fecundity as the birthplace of the Dionne Quin- tuplets. The pregnancy didn’t leave her own life as serene as she might have liked. The publishers of her annual calendar thought it was a great idea, and told her they expected the baby to be included in drawings for the 1992 calender, which were due this fall. That's why she now knows the sex of the baby, its name, and what it looks like, though Elly, John, Michael, Lizzie and millions of readers won’t know for months. But those readers will be hanging on in anticipation, sharing Elly’ mood swings with an emphatic LYNN JOHNSTON ... makes character pregnant How else could she make it so real? Elly’s baby isn’t the only change of life for Johnston. She’s just an- nounced another period of gestation, the planning of a series of six animated specials, to be produced by Ottawa’s Hinton Animation and broadcast on CTV. There are people Johnston knows and trusts at Hinton, she says, in- cluding director Sebastien Grunstra, who directed Johnston's first — and only — animated special, The Bestest Present. Like her daily strip, the TV specials will deal equally with the highs and lows of family life, John- ston promises. Her latest edition of collected strips show how much she is focused on the frustrating and smile and — many of them — _ even fearful job of raising a assuming that Lynn Johnston must _ teenager. be going through the same thing. It was the same this summer, when her father lay dying and she came to stay by his bedside. “I had these deadlines that couldn’t be put off. So I’d sit beside him and draw and write. I'd ask what he wanted me to write about, and he'd say, ‘Write about Michael and (his girlfriend) Martha,’ and | would. It was comforting.”’ One of the strips she drew at her father’s bedside has drawn more positive response than any other in recent times, she says. It was a weekend color strip in which Elly is seen laughing in a telephone conversation with a friend and then crying after hanging up. Lizzie asks why and Elly replies that her friend is dying, which makes her sad, but her friend is so funny she can’t help but laugh when they talk. 1991 MAZDA CAB PLUS 4x4 * 2.6L. 12 valve hM.P.1. *% Fold down rear jump seats * Fullsize spare tires : * Anti-lock brake system *16,595 1990 MAZDA MPV 4x4 No. 7-5403-0 * 3.0L. 13 valve V6 with M.P.t. * Multi-mode 4 wheel drive system * Rear seat heater with control *22,990 ALL PRICES INCLUDE FACTORY INCENTIVES * FREIGHT & PDI METALLIC PAINT & DEALER INSTALLS EXTRA Gary Maloney's CASTLEGAR MAZDA369-/241 /th Street Castlegar D. 7956 “‘Letme help you with your financial needs.
