WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. (CP) — In 12 Grapefruit
League games, Montreal Expos have scored 69 runs, an
average of three runs per game.

Even with the quirks of spring-time baseball, it’s not
easy to win games with such an anemic offence, yet the
Expos, for what it's worth, have played better than .500 —
12-11 in the exhibition season.

The reason they've been winning is largely because of a
pitching staff that has posted five shutouts and figures to be
the strongest part of the team this season. If the spring is
any indication, though, the staff might have to pitch under
fairly constant pressure while the batters scramble for runs.

“Please don't tell me that,” said Charlie Lea, one of the
starters who had his share of non-support in 1983. “Really,
you try not to think about those things, but it’s always nice
to see the runs go up on the board.”

Is the Expos’ lethargy simply a case of pitchers being
ahead of the hitters in the spring or is it a harbinger of

things to come?

CAN'T TELL
“I don't think you can tell off spring training,” said
Expos general manager John McHale, who has spent some
frustrating days in his box seat behind the backstop at
Municipal Stadium watching his team handcuffed by
pitchers whose names don't ring a bell among boxscore

“The routine is so different in spring training. During
the season, the player gets up in the morning and im-
mediately he starts gearing himself to play a game that day.
Down here, there are always other things to do, people to
meet, that disrupts a player's concentration on the game.”

Carter and Pete Rose — who went 4-for-4 on Tuesday —
have started to emerge from the hitting doldrums of early
spring, lending some credence to Rose's explanation that it
is only the last week of spring training that really matters.

“T think the exhibition season is far too long,” said Rose.
“I can't remember ever having that great a spring-training

season.”

NOT WORRIED
Bill DeMars, the Montreal batting coach, who also had
Rose under his wing in Philadelphia while with the Phillies,
said he isn't the least bit concerned by his spring output.
“I tell anyone who's worried about Pete to come back

and see me in two months.”

DeMars attributes much of the lethargic offence to the
fact most batters in the early part of spring only get in a
couple of at-bats, and usually they face a different pitch each
time. “It’s hard to get in much of a groove.”

But what happens if none of these theories is correct
and the hitters continue to keep their own pitchers on pins
and needles once the seagen starts? Is it possible to win a
division title while averaging about three runs per game?

Olympic deal
still unsigned

GALGARY (CP) — The
wording of clauses dealing
with a $30-million trust fund
remains the main stumbling
block to wrapping up a
$200-million funding agree-
ment between the federal
government and organizers
of the 1988 Winter Olympics.

Bill Warren, legal adviser
for the Olympic Winter
Games Organizing Commit-
tee, said Tuesday the com-
mittee agreed to the $30-
million figure.

But he said it would like a
clearer definition of how the
endowment fund, which Ot-
tawa has set up for the main-
tenance and operation of fed-
erally funded facilities, will
be used.

As part of the “umbrella
agreement,” Ottawa will
spend at least $62.2 million
building the ski jumps, bob-
sled and luge runs, as well as
a national training centre at
Canada Olympic Park.

Ottawa has also agreed to
give the University of Cal-
gary a maximum of $35 mil-
lion to build the world’s first
covered speed-skating oval
on the campus.

Warren said there is no in-
dication of how the proceeds
from the endowment fund
will be divided between
operating and maintaining
the costly skating oval and
park complex.

The financially strapped
university believes it will
cost more than $1 million an-
nually to operate the facility.
University officials fear they
will be left in debt after the
Games.
