‘inere let the press the people’a rights 1 Establistied in Nineteon Hundred and Forty-Seve: Dormitories Cost Taxpayérs Moré plagwhere in this issue of the Castle- gar News‘there appears a news story, re- porting on recommendations and sugges- tions made to the West Kootenay Regional College council. ‘by Kinnaird village chair... man Carl Loeblich. In the main Mr. Loeblich’s sugges: tions and sentiments are laudable ones. and should prove of great value tothe college council as it proceeds to develop .a college which will best meet the total needs of. the Kootenay and Boundary aa: areas. } However, there is one recommenda- tion that. deserves close study and second thoughts. That is Mr. Loeblich’s recom- mendation that future provision be: made for dormitory dation for. who will commute to the college from out- side a 20-mile to 30-mile radius of the college site. * In his ‘report recommending the ‘est ablishmeént of regional colleges, UBC pre- : _sident Dr. John B. Macdonald suggested their geographical positionng in ‘order that they might serve the largest possible - In‘one community the finance com- mittee recently turned down the mayor's request for “gold-bullion crests” at $6.18 each for the jackets of the councillors. There may be more. sense. in this fashion note than would. at first appear. .Just as the old school tie identifies its wearer, so the gold-bullion ‘crest would identify.’ for the. citi their © area population “on a “commuting basis.” * ‘ He did not advise’ ‘dormitory regional col- leges, And his reasons “for not doing so’ were sound ‘ones, The most important reason, of course, was ‘the high ‘costs involved for interior students who presently have: travelling ex- penses plus room and ‘board in either Vic- .toria, Vancouver or élseWhere. On a ‘com- miiting basis, these. students will be able to live at home. . The other ‘important reason is, of course, the : fact ‘that ‘dormitories cost money to build and. the money can only come from the taxpayers;' which, in, this ‘case means the property-own sident “within the’ school districts participating in the West Kootenay, Regiondl College. ‘Dr. Macdonald felt—and rightly ‘so—that, the taxpayers were .going ,to do .quite enough in: providing the : physical: educational plant without ‘shelling out for’ dorinitory . buildings.as well. In this regard, it is ‘important to’ note -the experience of. ‘the University ‘of Brit- ',ish Columbia.:-A ‘statement on UBC's: howis- ing policy, ‘prepared by Dr.’ -Macdonald and printed elsewhere, on this page, shows that UBC is having to finance ‘new dorm- itory projects with horrowed.
