The league-leading Nelson Maple Leafs sweep the Castlgar Rebels in four straight KIJHL playoff games, bringing the Rebels season to an end. MAY Ed Mills Six members of the Kootenay Cocoons Swim Club return home from the Masters Swim Championships in Duncan with 27 medals between them. The Castlegar Midget girls fastball team returns from Kamloops after beating 15 other B.C. squads for the Provincial C Championship. Williams Moving roars back from an eight-run deficit to capture the Recreational League Slo-Pitch title with a 19-17 win over the Avenues Eh’s. In the Competitive League final, Woodland Park Shell takes two from the league-leading T-Birds to win that title. One-hundred-and-thirty golfers descend on Castlegar for the annual Jim Young Celebrity Tournament. After the last ball is sunk, the local Red Cross is some $18,000 wealthier. The league-leading Nelson A’s successfully defend their Castlegar Men’s Commercial Fastball league title with a 7-3 win over the Valley Royals. AUGUST A math error gives B.C. the Western Canada Juvenile Golf Championship. Played at the local course, the host province is awarded the title after the leaders from Manitoba are disqualified for totalling a scorecard incorrectly. A record field takes to the local course for the annual Markin-Lightle Golf Tournament. Some $1,200 is raised from the tourney named for Castlegar men Dan Markin and Mark Lightle. The Valley Royals finish third at the Provincial Fastball Championships in Kelowna. Castlegar’s Wayne Stolz loses only one of 11 sets en route to capturing the 16-and-under division ‘at a tennis tournament in Vernon. Five members of the Castlegar Aquanauts return from the provincial swim championships with nine medals, bettering the seven the club won in both 1990 and 1991. SEPTEMBER The Bashers defeat Dexter’s 18-17 to capture the Summer League slo-pitch title. Thirteen members of the Kootenay Cocoons Swim Club return from the B.C. Seniors Games in Dawson Creek with 81 medals, an increase of 28 over the previous year. Castlegar’s Dorothy Martini leads the way with five gold, two silver and four bronze. Local teacher Diane McAfee cruises to a seven-stroke victory in the Castlegar Ladies Open. McAfee finishes with 81 while Ruth Trickey is next at 88. The Hi Arrow Devils brawl with the host squad at a soccer tournament in Penticton over the Labor Day Weekend. The Castlegar Rebels open their 1992-93 KIJHL training camp at the Community Complex with 32 skaters and 11 goalies in attendance. OCT The Castlegar Rebels open their KIJHL season with a 9-6 win over the defending champion Nelson Maple Leafs. Two nights later, they return from Spokane after a 9-2 loss. The Castlegar Tom Kats come home empty-handed after two losses at the Provincial Flag Football Championships in Vancouver. The Stanley Humphries senior boys volleyball team is ranked No. 1 in the province. Summertime resident Claude Vilgrain is demoted from the New Jersey Devils to the club’s American Hockey League affiliate in Utica, N-Y. The WKMSL season comes to an end for the Hi Arrow Devils as they drop a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Nelson Savoy in the league playoffs. Nakusp shades Savoy to successfully defend their WKMSL title. The Stanley Humphries senior girls field hockey team’s season comes to an end after a 1-0 shootout loss to Rossland in the regional final. NOVEMBER The Trail Bulldogs rally from a 12- point third-quarter deficit to defeat the Castlegar Tom Kats 26-13 in the Trail Flag Football League final. The Stanley Humphries junior girls field hockey team drops a 4-1 decision to Rossland in the regional final. The Stanley Humphries senior boys volleyball team advances to the Provincials with a win over Nelson’s L.V. Rogers. The senior girls drop a three- game decision to Trail’s J.L. Crowe. Castlegar’s Travis Green is promoted from the New York Islanders’ AHL affiliate in Troy, N.Y., to the parent club. He scores a goal in only his second NHL game. DECEMBER The Stanley Humphries senior boys volleyball team finishes eighth at the Provincials. Travis Green is returned to Troy. Nelson wins the inaugural Regional Super-Volley Challenge title in four games over the Kootenay Volleyball Club. The Stanley Humphries senior girls basketball team wins their own Blue and Gold Classic over Kelowna’s KLO 43-37. Travis Green returns to the NHL. Rossland Warriors player Chris Johnson is found dead at his Rossland home. He was 19. Claude Vilgrain is sent to Cincinnati of the International Hockey League.
