To Connolly, 27, Opopogo is not a cute, green tourist attraction, good only for decorating T-shirts, plastic toys and mugs. To him, Ogopogo is Naitaka — Water God. Dancewater Blues is a captivating and thought-provoking adult novel about an elderly white man who has lived on the shore of Okanagan Lake most of his life. As a youth, Brady Stuart saw Naitaka rise from the waters of the lake, and touched the monster. The experience left him in awe of the creature known to Interior Salish Indians for more than 300 years as Naitaka — Water God. Intent on protecting Naitaka from those who would take the creative captive for tommercial display, Stuart races to locate the mythical monster before they do. “*It’s an adventure story about the fight between high-tech searchers with subs and sonar equipment“and this old fellow’s attempt to stop them,”’ the author says. Connolly says Dancewater Blues is an attempt to return Naitaka to the realm of myth, or to make the lake creature — whatever it may or may not be — legitimate. “It’s been devalued by white cultures who miss the understanding of it.”” Connolly realizes that the subject matter of the novel may lead Prospective readers to think Dan- cewater Blues will be a ‘‘silly story.”” Not so, says the author. “I hope it will be a serious story. Ogopogo is a metaphor for issues of faith and belief in a technological FOR TRUSTEE VOTE BRIAN’S REPAIR SERVICE SMALL ENGINES * AUTOMOTIVE GENERAL MECHANICAL 613-13th St., © 365-7233 society. I think this novel is affir- mative,"’ he says. “‘I hope it is life- affirming. I hope it provides an engaging way of looking at the world.”” Born in Dawson Creek, in 1962, Connolly grew up in the Okanagan Valley, attending elementary school in Kelowna, and later, Shawnigan Lake Independent School on Van- couver Island. He studied at Okanagan College, and obtained his BA and MA from the University of Victoria. Now head of the English department at Shawnigan Lake School, Connolly returns to the Okanagan as often as possible. While in the Okanagan Valley, though, the author feels uncomfor- table about the subject matter of Dancewater Blues. Here he sees Naitaka transformed into a cartoon character grinning from tourist booths and roadside refuse bins. Here he sees only the commercial side of what may indeed be a majestic land-locked creature, or at the very least, a legend for cen- turies among the native people. “*I feel much better about it when I’m not in the Okanagan,’’ he says. “I really dislike the Ogopogo image. It’s become so silly.”” Does he think Naitaka really exists? “I think anything’s possible. I think there are a lot of things we don’t really understand. I suppose the novel is an attempt to revere, rather than the commercial image that the white culture has imposed on what should be a _ powerful story.’* Researching the archives at the Kelowna Museum, Connolly studied everything he could get his hands on about sightings of the lake monster. Ogopogo, says Connolly, is a non- sense word made up by travelling minstrels in the 1920s. “They made up a little song that had the word Ogopogo in it, and someone took it and applied it to the creature in the lake.’’ Dancewater Blues opens the reader to various interpretations of the story of Naitaka as seen through the eyes of Brady Stuart, his wife, Therese, and native and non-native people living by the lake. The irony of the story, says its author, is that Stuart is himself trying to possess the creature he is in- tent on protecting.
