Caribou, Me., Aug. 7.—Above this village, on the St. John river, isan island which Tom Clark, its original proprietor, stole from England away back in the days of the Aroostook war. This bloodless conflict began in the lat- ter part of the third decade of the pres- ent century, and did not close until the Webster-Ashburion treaty had been signed. While the treaty was under considerstion Thomas Clark learned that the St. John river was to be the boundary line between Maine and New Brunswick, and that the natural chan- nel of the riv sr was to mark the exact division. His island, which comprised «Lout 300 acres of wood and grass land, was in the river, but on the wrong side forhim, the channel running on the south side and annexing Clark and his farm to New Brunswick.
