PhotoF ILE LEARNING TO LEARN: YEAR 2000 ATA GLANCE Grade 8 students at Kinnaird Junior Secondary School get.a taste of the future in their humanities class. Their teacher, Deb . Chmara, has integrated many of the Year 2000 strategies into the classroom. Kaela Tompkins (left) and Selena Fodor enjoy being free to do their work where they ~ can spread out. Jennifer Rainville agrees, “It’s more comfortable,” she says. Many of the traditional restrictions in the classroom, such as students remaining in their desks, have been lifted by the. Year 2000 program. Meanwhile, Tammy Matthews prefers to stay in her desk. But regardless of where the students chose to work, they all 5 appeared to be working hard. * The assignment for the students on Wednesday was to finish their 30- page magazines reflecting life in the middle ages. Pictured here are two advertisements Chris Clement designed for his magazine. NEWS PHOTOS BY DONNA BERTRAND @ Saturday, January 11, 1992 Instructors and recent PEC of ‘Sel irk. Jan. 12 is the first Sunday after Epiphany on Jan. 6. In many churches it is tradition- ally the Sunday to remember the baptism of Jesus and to celebrate baptisms. The sacrament of baptism symbolizes belonging to Christ. In everyday life we use symbols. The maple leaf is a symbol of Canada. A hand- shake conveys friendship. Some of our deepest feelings can’t always be spoken. They have to be acted and done. In the sacrament of baptism, a material action conveys spiri- tual truth and power. As a sacrament, baptism is an act of God. Through it, God imparts truth and grace and we respond i in belief and trust. There is much variety in the practice of baptism in the church. Much argument has been made over the age of the _person being baptized and how the baptism is conducted. But whether it is the infant or believer’s baptism, immer- sion, sprinkling or pouring, the meaning is the same. Baptism is the sign of initi- ation into Christ’s church. Through the outward sign of water, God gives us the grace of new birth. The water of bap- tism has many symbolic -meanings. It symbolizes womb water and birth to new life. It symbolizes forgiveness and the washing away of all sin. Immersion particularly symbolizes death to an old CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH 809 Merry Creek Rd. 365-3430 PASTOR: BOB MARSH - — Morning Worship 6:30 p.m. — Evening Fellowship Home Growth Groups (Bible Study- & Prayer) Various Weeknights Youth Nights Friday & Sunday — EVERYONE WELCOME — UNITED CHURCH OF CANADA Ba\ 2224-6th Avenue 10 a.m. Worship 10 a.m. Sun. In bap- tism we are united with the death and resurrection of Christ and are incorporated into the Body of Christ (the World Church) not into a par- ticular denomination or local congregation. Over the past few years, many churches have taken a close look at their baptismal rites and policies. One result of this is that baptism is taken more seriously, particularly by those churches that practice infant baptism. Care is taken to make sure the person to be baptized, or their parents, un- derstand the seriousness of the commitment they are making being baptized. They not only confess their Chris- tian faith, but promise to live out that faith within the church and in all their lives. -DAY ADVENTIST CHURCH 1471 Columbia Ave., Trail 364-0117 Regular Saturday Services Pastor Slawomir Malarek 365-7759 CHURCH OF GOD 2404 Columbia Avenue Church School 9:45 a.m. Morning Worship 11 a.m.- Pastor Ira Johnson © 365-6762 ————— GRACE PRESBYTERIAN 2605 Columbia Ave. Morning Worship 11:30 a.m. Rev.
