showed this included 16
meals at $6 each for a total of
$96; highballs, wine and beer
in the amount of $72,90; and
$9.60 for food service.

finance and administration
division rejected the bill with
the notation “We cannot
reimburse for alcohol — only
the food.”

Nellie Fofonoff, 78, of
’ Shoreacres died on June,11 in
Kootenay Lake District Hos-
pital. Services were-held on
Saturday in the Chapel of the
Thompson Funeral Service
and on Sunday from .the
Shoreacres Community Hall.
Born at Kamsack, Sask. on
Dec. 16, 1903, she resided at
Ootischenia prior to moving
to Shoreacres in 1924 where
she had since resided.
Mrs. Fofonoff is survived
by her husband, Pete; one’
daughter, Mrs. Pete (Verna)

‘wall of water’

EMERSON, IOWA (AP) —

The westbound San Francis-

. co Zephyr passenger train hit
a “wall of water” and derailed
on tracks washed out by
flooding Tuesday, killing a
young woman and injuring
150 people, officials said.

Twenty-three of the 200
passengers on board were
taken to hospital.

Rescue workers used boats
to evacuate passengers from
the train which came to a
stop in water over a metre
deep.

“The engineer said he was
going 76 miles an hour
(122km-h) and was rounding
a bend and suddenly there
was no track in front.of him,”
said Jack Crandall, head of
Towa Disaster Services.

State Rep. Bill- Harbor,
who was at the scene, said
the engineer literally ran into
a “wall of water” when he
rounded the turn about 3
a.m.
’ “The lights went out and
then there was a whole lot of
screaming,” said Jason
Bridie, 12, of Clarinda, Iowa,

who had just boarded the
Amtrak train a half-hour be-
fore the accident. “We were
all thrown out of our seats.”

The train had passed be-
neath a county road overpass
when it derailed. The engine
came to rest in water on a
bridge over Indian Creek.
The first car was on its side
and the remaining 13 cars
tilted: off- as flood waters
swirled around the wheels.

Residents in th area had
been eyacuated during the
night because of torrential
rajns. |

gar and one sister, Polly of
Shoreacres.

Mrs. Fofonoff was prede-
