S. Thornton Langley, John. McTeer Repass. Mining Aiivestmente; c rresdundence’ Solicited. Oertoa: Rsecorp BLocK, ROBSLAND, B.C. A well attended meeting of citizens was held in the Waterloo hotel !2:‘ night to discuss ways and means of ad- ding te the equipment of the fire de-, partment. Col. Topping presided, and George Naden acted as secretary. The department at present has only 450 feet of hose available. This is scarcely sufficient to carry a line fer a single block, and a fire being over a block away frem the hydrant, it is impossible to fight it successfully. ‘I'here are five fire hydrants placed around town sv that with sufficient hose ample protec- tion can be given. J. P. McCarthy, the chief of the fire Jained the needs of the =pany, Linited, . Capitalised for only $250,000, TREASURY crock 25cts. G. A POUNDER, Pres. Roseland) B. C. The Ottawa Gold Mining Ce J. The hose would cost about 40 cents a foot laid down in ‘Trail, A suitable house with a drain- ing tower could be put up at an esti- mated eost of $75, $250, therefore, was absolutely needed by the fire de- partment at the present time. The question was then raised as to how the money could be obtained. A ball was suggested and met with some favor, but it was decided for the present to see what could be done by a popular subscrip- tion. It was estimated that there were 100 citizens in the town who should subscribe to the fund and placing each one’s portion at $2.50 the amount could be raised without difficulty. On @ former occasion when the fire boys pted to raise a jon to sh the large subscriptions of $10 ‘up were asked for. The plan was not a glorious success, but it was thought that by | making the amount smaller and the number of subscribers larger the amount could be raised. The vacant ground in the rear of the Crown Point hotel beside Lee Davenport’s office was suggested as a suitable place for the fire house. Colonel Top- ping, J. E. McCarthy, and M. Kaake were named as a soliciting committee> mii “Nothing’s tuo good for you when you stop at the Arlington.” That’s what trayeling men say and they know. Furthermore, its pretty gen- erally agreed that the Arlington is the beat hotel in the Kootenays. Itis maintained for the comfort of the guests and the profit of the proprie- tors, and the latter have shrewdly Ggured out that the surest way to make money is to look to it most cazefully that their guests are pleased. They have an ever watchful eye for the little details that go to make a first-class hoetlery, aud the standard of the house is correspondingly high. One doesn’t need to be a millionaire to stop there, either. ——— A GREAT PLAY. Mr. Potter of Texas Tonight at the Dominion. This play taken from A. C, Gun- ther’s book is probably one of the best known plays on the atage and in the hands of the present company willbe well produced. The Ameri- can Girl company is the largest com- pany that has visited Rossland and probably before we have another of its size and merit we will have enough “fakes” to make the ‘‘theatre goers” feel like appreciating a good com- pany. - The performance of Hazel Kirke last night was an excellent one. A fair audi wasin attend con- point on’ Quartz creek named Dundee. About 60 miners wo are engaged in work in that vicinity signed the peti- tion, Reports frum that section are to the effect thit the mineds are bin’s in attempting to dic- tate to them what the name of the postoffice must be and threatening to retard the pros- perity of the camp if the postoffice is not called Wild-Horse instead of Dun- dee. A miner who came down from Dundee last night eaid: ‘Corbin will be notifying us to name our babies and dogs after him next, I suppose.” It is known that Corbin wrote a per- sonal letter to a business man of that place threatening that if the name was not changed it would never be- come atown. It is known also that he has written other letters to people, who are supposed to have some in- fluence and who are under his thumb, for the purpose of carrying his threat into effect. — ee ALONE AND UNAIDED. Al. Marsh Has Drivena Tunnel Nine Hundred Feet. ” Al. Marsh, who was in Vernon last week from the headwaters of Kettle river, says a correspondent, over ten years ago began prospecting in that section and found a gulch behind the Monashee mountain which he made up his mind contained gold. He at once proceeded to tunnel for bed rock, and since then, alcne and unaided, miles from any human habitation, has continued his work. He has now a tunnel in over 900 feet, all accom- plished by his own efforts and with his own hands.. He has wheeled the earth and gravel out in = wheel- barrow and timbered up the tunnel as he went ahead, cutting the logs on the mountain side, rolling them down to thecreek bottom, packing them on his back to the dump and shaping them with axe and saw into the ne- cessary d he greatly incensed at an act of Dan Cor-| ,,o!
