Desmarais said Power Corp., which reported record earnings in 1986, has held preliminary discussions with Soviet officials about building a pulp and paper mill in the Soviet Union. . ‘The mill would be built by Consolidated-Bathurst Inc., which is 39.7 per cent owned by Power Corp., said Degmar- ais after addressing shareholders at the annual meeting of Power Corp. The company is also considering further expansion in the communications and energy sectors, he said. Expansion in communications would not be limited to Quebec, where Power Corp. has substantial interests in broadcasting and daily papers, including La Presse of Montreal, said Desmarais. A year ago, the Canadian Radio-television and Tele- communications Commission turned down the company’s bid to acquire Tele-Metropole Inc., Quebec's biggest private ing company. Desmarais said world oil prices would be a factor in further moves into the energy sector. Crude oil currently sells for about $19 US a barrel, down from, $32 in late 1985, when prices began to plummet, veventually hitting $12. Analysts say there is some optimism Lawyer dea LONDON, ONT. (CP) — Lawyer Louis Silverstein used to moonlight in the entertainment business after slogging through a 9-to-5 day of registering mortgages and drawing up wills. ‘These days, he’s wheeling and dealing for actors such as John Candy, Martin Short, Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis, Eugene Levy, Al Waxman, Scott Hylands and Megan Follows, star of Anne of Green Gables. He also deals with major motion picture companies, and once tried his own hand in production with the movie Strange Brew. Silverstein, who works from an office in Toronto's fashionable Hazleton Lanes district, says he makes “a very good living, in the range of a successful lawyer in any specialty field. “Fees can be substantial,” he said in a recent interview. Frequently, the job takes Silverstein and his wife, Roslyn, to Hollywood studio lots at MGM or Twentieth Century-Fox. START DREAMING “I have the feeling we're like a couple of kids let loose in the candy store,” the 41-year-old lawyer says. “You walk around these lots in Hollywood and you start dreaming. When I was doing Strange Brew, I had an office at MGM and a parking space with my name on it. Next to me was Robert Urich. Two spots down was (Sylvester) Stallone. In the morning, you're saying hello to these people.” For someone who grew up working in his family's fish market in this southwestern Ontario city, Silverstein says, Hollywood is like a “fantasy world.” “We pinch ourselves to make sure it’s real.” After completing high school in London and working through a BA in political science at the University of Western Ontario, Silverstein went on to law school at the CONGRATULATIONS To eight-year-old Sean Mclelian of 290-8th Ave., Trail, B.C winner of Major Door Prize, at last week's Wes! There has been speculation that Desmarais, 60, plans to turn over more of his responsibilities. In April 1986, he stepped down as chairman of Power Financial Corp, Power Corp.'s most profitable subsidiary, which includes Montreal Trustco Inc., Great-West Life Assurance Co. and the Investors Group. He was replaced by his won, Paul Jr. Asked by a reporter whether he planned to relinquish more power within the company in the near future, Desmarais replied sternly: “No, I don't think so.” Power Corp. earned a record $136.6 million or $1.05 a share last year, up from $110.8 million or 94 cents a share in SF power Financial Corp. contributed $88 million of the profit and Consolidated-Bathurst Inc., $35.3 million. Extraordinary items in 1986, including gains made by Power Financial on share issues by Great-West Life Assurance Co. and Investors Group Inc., boosted Power Corp.'s earnings up $238 million or $1.87 a share, up from $152 million or $1.29 a a share a year earlier. Assets last Dec. 31 stood at $1.33 billion. In the first quarter of this year, Power Corp. made $43.4 million or 33 cents a share, an increase of 41 per cent over the corresponding quarter in 1986. Company president Frank Knowles said the hefty first-quarter jump was a result of improved earnings a Power Financiat-Corp. and Consolidated Bathurst. - Is for actors University of Ottawa. A chance meeting with two former school chums 10 years ago launched his career as an entertainment lawyer. His first two show-business clients, a poetry-writing teacher and a rock ringer, are now in the real estate business, he says. “At the beginning, I was like the country doctor struggling and knocking on doors. “Here I was bang in the middle of recording deals and rock ‘n' roll names, major names. You'd go into these record studios and the producer had just done a Bob Seger or KISS recording. You got to thinking, ‘Wow, this is great. Fabulous.” “It was a lot different than what I was doing. It was a growing area and there were only a couple of guys doing it.” BUILDS CLIENTELE After consulting his wife, Silverstein says, he began a serious attempt to build up his entertainment clientele after hours, while continuing with more mundane legal tasks during the day. His breakthrough came during the production of SCTV with the birth of the McKenzie brothers, a spot in which Moranis and Thomas played two beer-swilling “hosers” dressed in lumberjack shirts in front of a map of Canada. The McKenzies went on to produce a record, Take Off, that sold 300,000 albums in Canada and 600,000 in the United States. They also starred in Strange Brew. Among Silverstein's other clients are the producers of Cats, which he says is the most successful live stage production in Canadian history. ~ He also represents MGM and Columbia in Canada, as well as producer Stephen J. Cannell, who has been responsible for television shows such as The Rockford Files, The A-Team and Knight Rider.
