Under the voluntary program, manufacturers can submit products to an independent panel of scientists and representatives of consumer and environment group and industry. for such products, a Ser The Management and Staff from West's Department Store would like to extend Season's Greetings to all our Customers and thank you for your patronage WALLACE HORNING PETER VATKIN Vil STOUSHNOW MABEL ISAKSON JEANNETTE HORNING GAIL SHELLENBERG LEE NEWTON ISABEL JONES PHYLLIS GOLDSBURY CAROL McLEAN ELAINE MARTIN LEONA MAY MARRIANNA WESTINGHOUSE ELSIE RYSEN DONNA YACKEL TERRY PHILLIPS DENNIS KRAHN WENDY BAKER AUDREY MAXWELL CHRIS DAY CHRISTINE MARKIN KATRIN LIEBENOW LINDA BUDAY LIL PRICE GLADYS LECKIE JUDY MORANDINI SHARON ISFELD HELEN SOOKACHOFF CAROL SOMMERVILLE DEBRA POTTER HEIDI MANN SARA VATKIN NATALIE KOORBATOFF ENJOY FREE SKATING Community Complex Tues., Dec. 27 Compliments of West's! The P Canadian Stan Study helps smokers WINNIPEG (CP) Nicotine gum ‘and evidence of damaged lungs are shaping up to be a winning combin ation in helping people quit smoking, the University of Manitoba's dean of medicin Nicholas Anthonisen, director five-year international lung health study, said 70 per cent of local participants have kicked the habit in the last two years. ays Anthonisen said researchers are hoping to learn if stopping smoking alone or in combination with a drug treatment will slow the progress of lung disease. Winnipeg is the only Canadian tre involved in the study of 10 North American cities. The study should be complete by 1993. There are 600 Winnipeggers be. tween the ages of 35 and 59 involved in the project, All recruits had to be suffering from lung problems, such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis, but have no other major medical illnesses. “It is the most successful program of its kind reported to date,” An thonisen said, referring to the stop. smoking portion of the research “Forty per cent was the target and it looks like we'll achieve that easily.” WILL NEEDED “When you've been a doctor for a few years, you learn you can't tell people what to do. People have to do something because they want to do it” Tony Leonard sales manager at Manitoba Telephone System par. ticipating in the program, said he smoked two to three packs a day, but quit on his own in 1967, only to start again 10 y A year ago, he quit once more after enrolling in the program Air Canada gets ready MONTREAL (CP) has announced an organizational rea lignment, effective Jan. 1, s later. Air Canada to ready the company for the decade ah The airline said the new structure at the executive level will be efficient with the removal of one layer of management “At the same time, more the commer. cial, financial and technical focus has been strengthened through bottom-line orientation with stronger more emphasis on cost controls and profit margins,” the statement said. The realignment “will position the company as an aggressive, profit able, privatized corporation gearing up for the '90s,” the airline said B.C. Products that are biodegradable, packaged in recycled or recyclable materials or are free of environ. mentally damaging chemicals, will likely be high on the list of initial applicants. USE LOGO The Canadian program is modelled on one in West Germany that began 10 years ago. By mid-1985, more than 450 West German products had been authorized to use the logo. Products that qualify for the Can. adian logo won't necessarily cost more to manufacture than products that don’t, said Kathleen Stephen- sen, policy director for the Con. sumers Association of Canada. “But the logo should not be a licence for the manufacturer to boost the price,” she said. The association is also concerned that the federal government has not put money aside to publicize the program. A spokesman for Environment Canada has said the department ex pects the companies involved to be responsible for promotion. S said the wants a method built into the pro- gram to evaluate whether it results in any real improvement in the environment. The environmental group Friends of the Earth supports the logo idea, executive director Julia Langer said, because the number of environ- mentally aware consumers is grow- ing. “What is positive about this,” she explained, “is that consumers are being given information about buy- ing choices. It highlights the out standing products and makes them stand out on store shelves.” You Are Invited to A CHRISTMAS DAY SERVICE Atthe Pentecostal New Life Assembly 10:30 a.m. 602-7th St., Castlegar | Travelodge VANCOUVER COQUITLAM EASY OF F/EASY ON Trans-Canada Hwy No. 1 Exit at Brunette.
