He was away on a business trip in Texas, He was supposed to be back today but his plane couldn't land due toa blizzarge Dawn's father was a famous lawyer and often travelled around Canada, byt he hardly ever went out of the country like he did this time. She didn’t want him to go in the first place, and when her mother had a phone call saying he wouldn’t be home for Christmas, she got really upset and went to the park to think about what had hap- pened. While she was walking home fiat day, she thought about Christmas without her father. He By AARON BEBELMAN Age9 It was Christmas Eve when everything started. There were two chipmunks get- ting ready for winter. They collec- ted nuts, berries, twigs and needles Itwasa beautiful sight The chipmunks went to see Mr. Beaver but he was not home. They went home to get ready for Santa Claus. They trimmed the tree and wrapped up presents. Whén everything was done, they sat down to eat their favorite things. They had nut pie, juicy berries and peanut brittle Just as they were drinking cocoa and looking at their Christmas tree, they heard a very loud crash It rocked their tree. Things started rolling around. They were scared A Christmas to Remember LAURA IMRIE cond place would be with all her relatives; she would only have her mother for company. When she got home, her A Chipmunk's Christmas Could this be Santa Claus? No, it was Mr. Beaver. He was chewing down their tree They shouted, ‘Stop Mr Beaver this is our home."” Mr. Beaver stopped chewing and peeked in their door. He saw the mess he made and was very sorry. The ‘chipmunks gave him his present and away he went But look at the mess. Santa would never find his way in heré The chipmunks got back to work They worked and worked. They were so tired, they fell asleep. But Santa was watching and he left them even more stuff. He said ‘Merry Christmas to all’ ashe flew away. The chipmunks never believed they would have a Christmas like that mother had dinner ready. As Dawn ate, she grew more and more upset about what had happened. After dinner, she decided to go for a walk in the woods. As she walked through the forest, she began to feel uncomfortable, Suddenly it turned dark and Dawn couldn't decide which direction she had come from. She was lost! It seemed like hours until the stars came out and cast a little light on the ground. Then she saw it; the bright east star was right above a clearing in the distance. Dawn followed it; she walked and walked. At last she found herself right outside her house. She ‘was home. As Dawn opened the door, ‘her father came to greet her. How or when he got home she didn’t care. She had her Christmas wish Nobody thought it would be that kind of Christmas. AARON BEBELMAN . third place Law easy to dodge OTTAWA (CP) — Some people may be able to smoke and get away with it on Canadian airlines after a total smoking ban goes into effect Dec 29, admits Transport Minister Benoit Bouchard. “It will be difficult to enforce the, ban in all cases,’ Bouchard said. **But that doesn’t mean weshouldn’t try."’ Foreigners leaving Canada have the best chance of beating the ban because there are no Mounties waiting for them at the next airport People visiting Canada for short periods can probably also ignore the ban because there’s no way to force them to pay a fine for smoking on an @ airplane. Canadians can try smoking on over- seas flights from Canada and hope their transgression is forgotten by the time they head home Smoking is banned by law on all domestic commercial flights under two hours. Air Canada and Canadian Airlines ban smoking on all domestic flights After Dec. 29, the ban will cover about 99 per cent of all flights by Canadian airlines. Charters paid for by an individual or group are exempt Canadian airlines have said they'll lose millions of dollars of business to foreign carriers wich allow smoking. Basically, the ban works this way ASKS FOR COPS A person found smoking on a com- mercial flight has to be asked by one of the flight crew to stop. If he or she refuses, then the pilot is supposed to radio ahead to the next stop for a Mountie to meet the plane. The Sirline has to make that person deplane so the Mounties can issue the offender a ticket which provides for a fine of $50 to $100. Airlines which don’t try to enforcé the ban could face fines of upto $10,000. Guy Delisle of the Air Transport Association of Canada, which represents the major airlines, said his group told the government the ban is unworkable on international flights ‘‘Orvall international flights the law isn’t worth the paper it is written on, Delisle said And if the traveller doesn’t "have a valid visa for the country at the next stop, the airline has no choice but to take the smoker to “his or her destination. Even on domestic flights, a smoker will be safe if no Mountie is available to CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY. The forestry operation-is near Rob- son Bight, 320 kilometres north of Vic- toria, and it is a prime gathering area for killer whales. The environmental group has ac- cised the forest company of making too-large clearcuts in the upper valley, dogging right up to creek banks-and causing erosion and a mudslide ‘by building roads in the rain. “‘We welcome the opportunity to show MB our concerns out in the field, providing the media are there to keep everybody honest,"’ said committee spokesman Clinton Webb. Another condition of accepting the invitation is that MacMillan Bloedel give the committee its logging plans for the valley so it can make submissions before the deadline on public input MacMillan Bloedel has been holding public viewings for its Tsitika logging plans in Port McNeill, Sayward and Campbell River where’ logging is im- portant to the local economies. The company has said it plans to log 57 per cent of the 39,500-hectare watershed Twenty-nine per cent is to be left alone as being too sensitive to log, seven per cent will be left for deer and elk range, |six per cent put into accepted — ecological reserve and one per cent set aside for a regional park LEGALS meet the incoming flight, says Delisle.
