S( P1 qrc 1:1EPP-]ALK ~ When Desi Monaghan said to me the other day, " Do you guys realise that in less than two weeks I'll be making ice in the Arena?" It made some of us sadly aware that summer, as we have known it in 1980, has been one of the poorest excuses for a summer that we have known in recent years. Except for a couple of twoweek periods when it was really summer-like weather, 1980 has been one of the wettest on record and cool to boot. Unless the trend changes in the next couple of days and we start what was known in the old days as Indian summer, we may as well get ready to welcome another six months of ice and snow. Of course, this will make some people happy, especially those who frequent the ski slopes around town, but to some others it will be a pain in the neck. Oh well, maybe 1981 will be a good summer! Regardless of what happens, our big annual celebration is upon us and by the time you read this the Queen will have been chosen and the Golden City Days will be well on its way. «ilh Ha-Ty Pepper which starts with a sausage and pancake breakfast, will wind down with a teen dance at the High School and will have something for everyone from the wee tots to the older folks be they from our town or out-of-town. Sunday, the Oddfellows Pancake Breakfast gets things off to a good start and after a church service at Esling Park, the athletes among us take over. First, it will be the bike races at 10 a.m., then the rapidly improving Golden City Grind, a five mile run that attracts them from all age groups and will probably have a full quota of entrants again this year. At 3 p.m. the little ones get their inning as Local 480 puts on its Kiddies' Sports day at Jubilee Park and the day will wind down with the big Credit Union Beef Barbecue in Esling Park. A whole lot of volunteer work has already gone into this celebration and a whole lot more will br required to make it come out right. So, if you are asked by your club or organisation to pitch in, do it with a smile. Don't forget, "A smile makes everything worthwhile." Word has ft ,that a very special effort is being_ put out to make the 1980-31 Warriors a team to remember. Some new blood is being obtained to bolster what will be retained from last season and hopes are riding high. I have attended a couple of meeting of the organisation and there is a lot of enthusiasm among the people who will be responsible for this year's team effort. Doug Buhr and his action people, Jim Markle and his executive crew and Arnie Sherwood and his promotional group are ready to go with everything to make this a remarkable season for Rossland's hockey fans. So far we haven't heard much from the other teams in the league, but you can bet they will be heard from when the first puck is dropped on Rossland ice. Despite the fact that a lot has been written and spoken about the performance of our Canadian Championship team ' from Trail in the little league World Series in Williamsport, Pa., I can't let this chance pass to add my congratulations to these boys who represented our area in the World Series. To me, the fact that they played so tenaciously, even after that devastasting loss to Taiwan, is the mark of the excellence of all areas of the teams' organization, from Manager Andy Bilesky and coach Ernie Schleppe down through every member of the team. The City of Trail must be very proud of every one of you and we in Rossland hope you will honor us with your presence in our Golden City Days parade, as you did before. I, for one, will be proud to cheer you along as will many who followed your exploits throughout the playoffs.
