N CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, } 1875, Letter to the Editor Invites Opinions on Situation Dear Sir: I have read with interest Alderman Freno’e -:marks in support of the parxing meters in Nelson, and I for one, (not being a resident of your fair city), cannot say that I agree with his views on the matter, Alderman Freno would perhaps have a different opinion if he was on the paying end and not where he presently-is—on the receiving end anda beneficiary! ‘The City of Nelson would soon die if it did not get the business support: from the people in outlying areas, out- side the city Hmits. Further more, the city should recognize that fact and quit biting the hand that feeds it. «Mr. Freno forgets that people in outlying areas have familles to support, children to raise and edueate, taxes to pay and other numerous expenses of their own. These people should not be forced to subsi- dize the city of Nelson by penalizing them every time that they park on their streets, People come to Nelson to buy thelr necessities and spend their hard-earned money, from which the city merchants make a healthy profit, This seems to be all taken for granted. If an outside shopper happens to be delayed in one of the stores and the parking meter runs out, he finds a parking violation on the windshield, saying “Thanks for your patronage in our store!” That's quite a slap in the face and is very distasteful and disgusting to say the least. You would be surprised to learn how many people have been turned away by this, and have taken their business to Castle- gar. Castlegar is a growing city and is not greedy. They have the same expenses as any other city and manage ‘quite well ‘without the annoying “one- armed bandits” (parking meters). Also, for a city, they do not have the revenue that the city of Nelson enjoys from U.S. Supreme Court OK’s Public Spanking ‘The U.S. Supreme Court © has ruled that public school teachers may spank a pupil against the wishes of the child's parents, ‘The court affirmed without comment a decision of a three- judge federal court in North Carolina upholding corporal punishment and spelling out procedures to be followed. The lower court said the pupil must be informed before- hand that he might be spanked asa disciplinary measure and that a written explanation should be furnished to a parent on request. its Hydro resource on the Kootenay ‘Alderman | Freno did not reveal how much revenue in parking meter fines the clty collects per year. Also, he made no mention of the thousands of dollars they just received (like a windfall) from the natural gas tax increase on export, shared by municipalities as a direct grant from the provinelal gov- ernment, When Is the hungry appe- tite’of the city of Nelson going to be satisfied?! It must cause the city fathers some embarressment of the method that the meters arc policed. Recently, I have been a victim of a parking’ violation and out of curiosity have watched the meter ticket man perform his duties. He wanders about the street as though he has all the time in the world, looking for expired meters. When he spots one, he hurriedly writes out a violation ticket, sticks it under the windshield wiper, then hurriedly takes off like a thief at the scene of a crime so as not to be apprehended. Why are shopping centres so popular and springing up all over our province? One of the main reasons is that these shopping centres appreciate. their customers and out of courtesy, provide free parking —in adverse to the Baker Street Bandits, a term so freely used for the Nelson merchants, Baker Street merchants may wake up one day to the fact that they have no cus- tomers, if they continue to pursue and penalize customers with the offensive meters and fines. The new Nelson shopping centre may soon accomplish. ‘The City of Nelson pre- sently taxes, bicycles, dogs,. property, houses and busi- nesses. ‘Trucks require special municipal licerises (however, if you area non-business man and operate.a truck, you do not have to pay for a license, but must pay $2 to prove that you ” are exempt). Nelson also received a healthy per capita grant for every man, woman and child within the city limits; gets a wealthy revenue for its power. plant and windfall grant from” the natural gas exports; but its hunger for more money still persists, When ia this hunger going to be satisfied? Certainly, the people out- side the city boundaries are not responsible to the city for its problems and should not for- ever be penalized for them. Some courtesy and due respect should be shown to these people, How many people are there outside the city limits now? Support my views. Let's hear from you.
