CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, February 19, 1976 Letter to the Editor Dear Sir: Reading a letter to Ann Landers, and her piquant reply gave me a hearty chuckle, and set me to reminiscing. An Easterner had taken her to ask, Pay'n - Takit Lid. Castlegor’s Biggest Little _Super-Markell MEATS AT LOW, LOW PRICES! Take “doing the dishes" for instance: That can comprise TENDER SPARE RIBS PORK CHOPS _ CENTER CUT Only Ib. $1.79 ‘ything from hi them up from the table, stack- ing them, scraping, washing and drying them, to putting them away in the. cupboard, How economical a term! But, although they may not actually “wash” the dishes, they still have to “do” some- thing to them—such as at least four of the above-mentioned tasks. Now I ask you—isn't the term “doing the dishes" a more comprehensive form of these activities? If the Eastern lady would stop and ponder the words “lorry” and “petrol”, for in- stance, she would realize that she, too, could be asked that same question she asked Ann Landers, for it is safe to say that she uses the words “truck” and “gas” as do the rest of us on this side of the Atlantic, and not the really “English” terms, ‘I was a bit browned off myself, recently, in much the same manner. As it is, I am atill wondering, My mother used that expres- sion, as did her mother, and I can only presume that it is a colloquialism that my paternal grandmother did not use. Until I find out just what Ontario women born in 1860 would call the transferral of food from the pot on the stove to the dish that brought it to the table, I shall have to let the term “dish up" stand! “~ Another, example of non- communication: Many years ago, when only 13, I had a rather scathing experience. I still wonder if the teacher in question was heartlessly ig- had sald in a gentle tone of voice, “I heard what you said, child, but I do not und And What Language Do You Speak? Lucy Ellen Eaton Castlegar what you mean by that expres- lon.” The class would then have had a lesson in deportment, as well as learning a new way of saying, “What?” I, an uncom- fortable newcomer, wouldn't have felt so utterly alienated by the class’ reaction to her unkindness. | If more of the social amenities were taught in the home and school there wouldn't be so many over-loaded social workers in our modern soclety, An ounce of understanding today may prevent pounds spent Inter In analysis or social work, It might even prevent more than a few crimes being committed by some unfortun- ate who had too many mis- norant, or heartless, or merely rude. I had gone fora lengthy stay with my grandmother in Connecticut while my mother had a long siege in hospital, The teacher had asked me a question. -Absorbed in my thoughts, I hadn't heard it, and looked up in consternation, to stammer, “I beg your pardon?” “What did you say?” she demanded with an incredulous tone to her voice, 1 again repeated the ex- pression taught me by my last teacher, up in Canada, rather nervously, for all'the forty-odd heads in the cl: were come his way, Understanding, tolerance and politeness are a good way to begin, They speak a universal language.
