To date the com- mittee has been in- volved in promoting The City Voice such traffic safety is- sues as Spring and Christmas Counterattack, the Two Way Left Turn brochure, Anti-Speeding Campaigns and Child Car Seat Safety Checks. In the fall of 1991, we regrouped and laid out some long term goals and short term objectives. However, in order to achieve these goals and objectives we require much more community participation. We inyite you or a representative of your organization to become involved in the Castlegar Traffic Safety Committee. We are seeking new members as well as someone to chair the Committee. Your participation can help make our community safer. Too often we hear of the carnage on the highways. Joining a Traffic Safety Committee is an opportunity to do some- thing positive. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 1992 at 7:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers, 1402 Columbia Avenue, Castlegar. We hope you will find the time to become involved because together we can make the difference. For more information please contact Alderman Kirk Duff, Acting Chairperson at City Hall, 365-7227. Tug tribute hits Nelson An exhibition of models of Kootenay Lake Sternwheelere G arr OPS Opens a Ul Nelaor Museum on April 4 and continues until April 30. The models are the work of Bert Learmonth of Willow Point, who has gained a repu- tation for the authenticity and expertise of his models. Learmonth has been work- ing on the series of Kootenay Lake models since the winter of 1984 and has completed most of the heavy shipping of the lake, including boats of the Columbia and Kootenay Steam Navigation Company (later CPR) and the Kootenay Railway and Navigation Com- pany (Great Northern), and one barge. Learmonth has had a 20- year ambition to build models of the local ships, as his father was employed on them, and they were part of his growing up. He had always built mod- els, so was familiar with the process of building to scale. Most of the ships have been built to the same scale, al- though Learmon as also built smaller HO models for the Kaslo Bay model at the S.S. Moyie, and for the railway museum at Cranbrook. The ships have been built from weeping willow, which Learmonth has found to be an excellent wood for model- building, strong and flexible. Detailing has become a fine art in Learmonth’s models, the latest, and the largest and most elegantly-appointed ship, the S.S. Nasookin, con- tains tiny tables and chairs, bureaus, and even cuspidors in the men’s smoking area. As well as the exhibition of sternwheelers, tugs and a barge, Learmonth has assem- bled a series of photographic slides of the boats, which will be shown on two Thursday evenings during April, at 7:30 p.m. on April 9 and 23. An opening reception with Learmonth in attendance will CERTIFIED GENERAL: ACCOUNTANT 270 Columbia Avenue Castlegar - 365-2151 Surgenor & Rogers CERTIFIED GENERAL ACCOUNTANTS 1444 Columbia Avenue, Castlegar, B.C.
