It’s like operating out of an old house—pretty cramped. “We also need space for a Vic- tim Assistance coordinator—we really want to see that program fly as well.” The site for the proposed sta- tion is between city hall and the Bank of Montreal. “We would coordinate it with the Downtown Revitalization, to make good use of the land,” he said. 5 i. Duff added.that the location will offer ample parking. According to City Administra- tor Gary Williams, the new facil- ity would take between one year and 18 months to complete. He said the City of Castlegar has known that the present police building has been inadequate for at least the last 10 years. “Tt doesn't meet space require- ments and the cells are inade- quate,” Williams said. Staff Sergeant Hall of the Castlegar RCMP detachment said there have been a number of health and safety standards offi- cials who have identified defi- ciencies. “But for the most part, these have been dealt with,” he said, Still, the problem of inade- quate cell space remains. “There. is the possibility of four different types of offenders Hall said. The different types of offend- ers include, male and female juvenile and male and female adult. “We have two cells,” he said. “That often leaves us in the posi- tion of having to beg cither Nel- son or Trail for cell space. Hall is hoping the results of the upcoming referendum will produce positive results for the proposed station. “It'll be great if it material- izes,” he said, “But we'll be looking at a lot of money. We just have to wait and sec.” According to Gary Williams,” the city of Castlegar would be Tequired to provide the property and building, while the province pays rent for the RCMP on the basis of the cost of the rural detachment. “We're just in the process of selecting an architect who will site the building on the property,” Williams said. “The RCMP plan- ners feel the property is ade- quate.” Williams also said that the possibility of a new downtown firehall is being considered. A committee has been set up to gar’s aging streets. They had concerns alright— but not about the paving. At least one dozen residents attending the open house were angered, upset and suspicious as to why council decided to hold an open house rather than a pub- lic forum when handling the paving rehabilitation—an issue which involves large sums of money. “This meeting was a perfect example of a waste of time. Simons Ltd., the consult- ing firm working for Celgar at the time of the alleged discharge, faces three counts under the Waste Management Act and one count under the federal Fisheries Act. During Monday's proceedings, the defense council argued against the validity of a sworn document from a witness for the crown, say- ing the material was void because it was'simply taped together.
