WHAT THE PROVINCE NEEDS Mining men who are in touch with the London investor say that all eyes are turned to South African mines as the future field of invest- ment when the war is ended and that little attention is paid to Brit- ish Columbia mines. If this should prove to be the case, it will be the fault of the province itself. Even now, when the purse strings are drawn tight on account of the war, large investments are being made in Australia and New Zealand. Yet their mines are no better than those of British Columbia, their ores are not as rich and the only real ad- vantage they have is that produc- tion has been longer in progress. The principal reason why the op- portunities for lucrative investment in this province do not attract the British more generally is that no organized effort has been made to tell them what we have. The gov- ernments of Australia and New Zealand maintain able, pushing men as agents general in London, with a thorough and constantly replenished display of their products, mineral, agricultural and every other kind, and with an abundant supply of at- tractive, well-illustrated reading matter descriptive of what those colonies contain. These agents general never miss an opportunity of extolling their colonies at public meetings and banquets, where they are invited to speak. Thus a man to whom an investment is offered is Ikely to have already gained a gen- eral knowledge of the subject, suf- ficient to interest him in the propo- sition, and, if he wishes to brush up and increase this knowledge, he kaows where to go for books, re- ports, and to see samples of the products. It would be money well spent for British Columbia to follow the lead of her sister colonies and establish an agent general in London. fully equipped with all the necessary ma- terial for advertising its resources. A new country which relies on the general reputation of its resources can no more compete for capital with one which sends out its repre- sentative to tell the whole world of them, than a manufacturer who never sends out drummers can com- pete with one who keeps men con- linually on the road bringing ‘his wares before the merchants; nor than a merchant, who merely sits back in his store, can compete with one who constantly brings his bargains before the eyes of the people by advertising in the daily newspapers. The coming of Sir Charles Tup- per to Rossland next week will be the signal fora great rally ot the liberal-conservative party to hear their veteran leader. Not only will they feel impelled to honor him for his distinguished servicesto the Do- minion, but they may look forward to an oratorical treat froma man who is still vigorous on the verge of four-score years. The Victoria Colonist thus comments on his speech there on the 16th: “The verdict of everyone after hearing Sir Charles Tupper is that he is a remarkable man.
